I just can't stand the way Campy shifts. Those little buttons drive me crazy, I hate it. In contrast I really like the placement of Shimano shifting so long ago I decided to go with Shimano for everything. I also will only buy/drive Honda/Acura products. I think I have a fetish for the Japanese and the way they do things.
I can't stand the way that Shimano uses a brake lever to shift, drive me crazy. I like the "little button." I like driving Nissans and Subarus... but I can't stand Honda design (looks and ergo, they make great mechanical parts and don't skimp on suspension). It's not a Japanese thing, it's just personal preference.
Neither? My argument against Ultegra is simply that I don't like the ergonomics of Shimano shifters. My argument against older Campy 10 is that spare parts won't be available for ever. I'd rather mix/match parts than go strictly with either group.
Campagnolo 11-spd was introduced in 2008, so 10-spd Record was sold at least until then. That would make it no more than 6 years for the most recent and perhaps more like 4 or 5 with some overlap.
Thanks! I took a few shots at searching, but didn't find that. I was looking more for timeline information, but the ones I found just barely made it to 11-spd.
Neither as I would say the Chorus 11-spd that I currently have. I went from a Centaur double to a Centaur/Chorus triple to a compact 11-spd Chorus in the first 6 years that I owned the bike. The upgrades were mainly due to changing riding styles. All of the previous parts are still completely servicable.
I bought the bike as a F/F and had it outfitted with a full Centaur drivetrain as I discovered that the chain movement always matched the shifter movement. With Shimano (and SRAM) half the shifts match the shifter movement and the other half doesn't.
It's personal preference. Before Shimano 6800/9000 Campy would be far preferred because of smaller lever size and under the bar cable routing (7900 had it but tended to break the cables). I personally like the small old style Campy levers even though I have large hands, but the size difference isn't really all that noticeable. I never had a problem with any Campy levers I have used, even the Escape ones everybody hates. The only major issue is the front trimming with Escape, everything else worked just fine (I don't mind clicking the thumb button multiple times). I still have the "good" year 10 speed Centaur levers that have multiple shifts and front trim and they've performed absolutely flawlessly for many thousands of miles.
I suggest you try them both out and see which you like more.
