I'm looking for a set of back up wheels and my budget is fairly small. Does anyone have an opinion as to which would be the most bang for the buck? The Eastons are about 150 grams lighter, but is the Fulcrum quality better since they are made by Campy? I can get either set for around $225 shipped.
I compiling a list of all the sub $400 wheelsets I can find before I pull the trigger on a set. The Eastons are pretty nice....don't know enough about the Fulcrums tho....
My list so far:
Xero XR-1s
Reynolds Alta Comp / Alta Race
Reynolds Solitude
Easton Vista / Vista SL
Vuelta Starlite
FSA RD-220
Mavic Ksyrium Equip
Fulcrum Racing 7 / Racing 5 EVO
Cane Creek Volos
Neuvation M28 Aero 2 / R28 Aero 3
I've got a set of the Vista SLs on my bike now. I've put about 2000 miles on them and they are still as true as the first day. I'm upgrading to Fulcrum 1s (should be here tomorrow or friday) because I was bit by the upgrade bug, not because I had a problem with the Vistas.
They're going to be hanging around as my indoor trainer wheel and might see some action on another frame from time to time, but all in all I have to say they've been a very reliable wheel.
2 things to note: First, I needed to use the thinnest rim tape I could find. Thicker tape was getting in the way of tires seating correctly.
Second, I'm not a light rider. I'm 200lbs and they put up with all the stress I could give them. Had them up to 50mph on some steep descents and never really felt like I was in dire peril.
I have Fulcrum 7s, and I would agree with Kwantani's review--they are very nice, very durable wheels. I have put about 650 miles on mine in the past five weeks, all pounding winter training riding--potholes, sand, salt--here in CT. I'm 6'4" and 178#, and they work great for me--stiff, responsive. They are similar in feel to my old Ksyrium Elites.
I bought a set of Cane Creek Volos with Ti spokes and have to say I'm very impressed with them. They have taken some pretty serious hits and stayed true, look good, spin up nice and fast, plus ride well with no creaks or flex that I've ever noticed.
I'm about 160 lbs and a recreational rider. I have no desire to switch to another wheelset. You also don't see everyone with a bike rolling Cane Creek, a nice little bit of individuality (though building your own wheels tops this ego exercise).
