    Moving back to Vegas

I am excited to be moving back to Las Vegas at the end of the month. I lived there briefly about 5 years ago but was not active then. Will be living in Summerlin, hopefully close to the Charleston/215 area.

Any tips or such for me? I currently ride exclusively solo due to a lack of cycling community where I live, but hope to get some group ride experience. Do some triathlons as well. I enjoy taking the CX bike on the chip/seal and mild off road so plan to check out Red Rock as well. Thoughts?

Yeah, rethink about moving back to a sh*thole. If you let the guys out at Nellis use it as a weapons testing area; then it might be entertaining. Never saw why people thought Vegas was such a great place. Not much to do unless you're into gambling or casinos, waaaay over priced shows and concerts, over priced restaurants that serve nothing better than hospital food, over priced drinks at any place other than a local bar, rude self absorbed self important people, everything always billed as the greatest the best anywhere, totally f*cked up traffic 24/7, temperatures the same as the surface of the sun for 9 months out of the year. Yeah, I wanna move there. But hey, different strokes right?

Sorry about the rant. I'm just glad to be out of that hellhole. From 215/charleston you will have easy access to Red Rock, Blue Diamond. You can even loop into 159(?) going out to Parumph. Cottonwood Valley(mountain biking) is out on 159(?). The south side is harder more technical than the north side but on the north side you can ride into Blue Diamond. There is always a group that meets every Sat/Sun at the Starbucks on Charleston/Town Center. There is a website (Cycling Las Vegas?? Bicycle Las Vegas??) that lists all the rides going off weekly. The Tour de Summerlin is overpriced for what its, the Las Vegas Century is overpriced and if you want to race locally; good luck.

Sorry you disliked it so much. I am moving for work so not a lot of choice, it will be for 2-3 years. I will say that I have literally lived all over the country, from Vegas to the south east to mid Atlantic and mid west. Vegas has been my and my wife's facorite city. Shows are overpriced, but cost of living is overall pretty good.

I have seen some of the details on the group rides on Charleston. I have also looked at the google maps bike layer and seen some of the west rides. If anyone has any other tips let me know.

You are right about the cost of living overall. I've lived in Hawaii, Cali, Vegas, South Carolina and I've probably been to half the states in the union. Right now the I'm in Austin, TX. Overall the cost of living is slightly higher but there is far more things to do on a day in day out basis. People are friendlier. Road and mountain biking everywhere. Racing is everywhere if you want to do that. The shops here make shops in Vegas look pretty sad by comparison but yet Nu Vision had a big banner proclaiming them as "the best bike shop in the country". Hell, they weren't even the best shop in Vegas much less the country. And that's what I what I hated most about Vegas; the "we're the best anywhere" attitude that alot of people had. Don't know what world they were living in and only they could tell what color the sky was. It also seem to be their driving philosophy behind the pricing on the Tour de Summerlin or Las Vegas Century. Pretty sad when you can go almost anywhere and and do a similar ride for half the cost and it would be better organized. Doesn't give you alot of encouragement to do things in Vegas when you know you are being ripped off. I was in Vegas for 16 years and hated every minute of it but I didn't have to worry about work. That is the only good thing I can say about Vegas. I didn't have to worry about my job.

    Welcome back gte105u,
I think you will happy with your return to Vegas. The cycling community has been growing very rapidly over the last couple of years. I believe I read that Henderson is becoming one of the premier triathlon locations in the nation. Check out Biking Las Vegas Bicycling Community, Cycling Forum, Blog, Pics, Videos, Bike Rides & Events, Routes & Maps, Classifieds for Las Vegas Cyclists | Biking Las Vegas Cycling for more details.

I'll be driving out from Louisiana tomorrow. Arrive Monday, find a house (rental) and fly back Sunday for some meetings and to move. I am taking my Allez so plan to check out some riding while there. May check out a group ride Saturday even.

Bring plenty of spare tubes.... this place is a killer.

But, the cycling community it pretty tight. I live on the southwest side of town, and man is it windy!... I could've sworn Chicago was supposed to be the windy city, but it doesn't hold a candle to the kind of gusts we get out here.
I did the red rock loop last weekend, and it wasn't all that bad. However, climbing 1800ft made my lungs burn... LOL

Cost of living is ok, I hate the strip, because My work is centered in these damned casino/hotels. And yeah, plenty of self absorbed, self conscious, rude, and dainty individuals exist here. I swear it has something to do with the Nuclear testing that was done in the 40's here. The place is a tourist trap, houses have skyrocketed, and market is tough.
This is the fast food mecca...... All in all, if like me, you stay out of the Casinos, and don't let the culture get to you, you'll be ok.
Biking las vegas is a good forum, I'm on there also, lots of cool people. The shops are pretty good too. You'll be close to a few of them, so hang out and get to know these guys/gals.
