My 2011 Cannondale Synapse Carbon 5 came with Shimano RS-10 wheels. I put about 700 miles on them (I weight 215 lbs) last summer and they stayed true, etc.
I'm toying with the idea of upgrading the wheelset. I plan on doing a 62-mile "horribly hilly" ride this summer (6000+ feet of climbing). I'm thinking perhaps a nicer wheelset might help me a bit.
Any thoughts on the following options and wisdom:
1) Just ride 'em until they show problems. Any gains from a newer everyday wheelset will be minor.
2) Pick up those Mavic Kyrsium Elite's I see on close out for $450. Great deal for a 1550g wheelset that can handle my weight.
3) Build and take pride in my own wheelset (I did this for my touring/commuter bike and am confident I can handle a trickier lightweight build). Do something like White or Ultegra hubs, OpenPro or Velocity Aerohead rims, DT Revo spokes. Probably build a 32/28 at my weight. Unless I spent serious cash, probably heavier that the Kyrsium Elite but there is the fun/pride issue.
