I have sets of Race A's on both of my bikes and think they are great. I've got probably 1500 miles on one set and they are wearing very well and handle pretty good too. Sorry, no experience with the D's.

I have some Type D's on a wheel set right now, I have about 2000-2500mi on them.
The good, wears well, plenty of grip, decent ride quality, price.
The bad, PITA to mount the first time has gotten easier since 1st mounted, profile is not round (think ProRace 4) creates a weird steering feel, quickens it up in a negative way to me.
The GP4000s is still my go to tire but the Type D is on my would buy again list. I would say the Type D is pretty close to the GP4000s. Almost as much grip, similar ride quality, similar wear and flat protection if not a little better. I am not crazy about the non round profile but some people may like it and it is not off putting enough for me not to buy them again.

i just did 7 hours on a 700x25 type d on the rear. the 25 is too big for my steel forks so have ordered a 23 for the front.
my word can't be gospel as only had 7 hours but the tire is excellent. had veloflex pave's and vittoria open pave and i would rate them as good or better. i got them for puncture protection but cannot beleive how good they roll.
i was skeptical about the shape but got over it soon enough.
i have used gp4k's but didn't feel the love with them and wasn't sure about compound tires opposed to threaded tires.
these have really blown me away.
