    Stock pads O.K. for Zipp 404 tubulars?

    I recently picked up a set of used Zipp 404 tubulars to use exclusively for time trials and plan on using regular wheels 95% of the time. Can I get away with using regular brake pads during time trials. I know braking power will be diminished but I can't see myself swapping out brake pads everytime I have a time trial. I'm mostly concerned if stock pads may damage the Zipp 404 braking surfaces.

    NO!!!! Get some Zipp, SwissStop, or Cork pads if you want to run carbon tubulars. If you use your rubber pads you might as well kiss them good bye.

    If your worried about damaging the braking surface, I would for sure get some quality pads (all for swiss yellows).

    using regular pads with carbon hoops usually tend to be really "grabby" and non existant in the wet.

    I do know some guys that use reg used pads with their carbons. yes it speeds the life sucking process out of the braking surface, but they are still alive to talk about it.

    if you use the same pads on alu rims they will pick up small pieces of aluminium in them that will work better than rough sandpaper on your carbon rims.

    You say that you're only going to be using the wheels for time trials for 5% of the time. C'mon! Swapping pads is a less than 10 minute operation and the frequency with which you'll do it will be minimal.

    I mean, you already went and bought the 404s. If you can't see yourself swapping pads, then you should have not bought them...or bought something with an aluminum brake track.

    Use the right pads!!

    I simply wanted to know if it was 100% absolutely necessary to use carbon specific pads. Since it apparently is I'll dedicate this particular bike to T.T.'s only. (with the correct pads) I've got 3 other road bikes I guess I have the luxury to use it for one task.

    If you use Yellow Swissstop pads, you can use them on both aluminum and carbon rims. But make sure you clean the pads off before you switch to the carbon wheels. Or, as someone else mentioned, you might get aluminum residue embedded into the carbon brake surface.

    I just finished reading an article by Leonard Zinn and basically what he said was outside of poor braking performance and short brake pad life stock pads posed no threat to the carbon rim itself. He also confirmed this with a spokesperson from Zipp. In any event I'll probably just pick up some carbon specific pads.

    Wait, that could be interpreted two ways:

    either:

    "You don't need a carbon-specific pad compound, regular pad compounds work fine on carbon rims."

    OR

    "You don't need to swap pads every time you switch between aluminum and carbon wheels."

    Are you referring to this article? Because to me, it reads like the first, not the second, interpretation.

    NO don't use regular pads. They have a harder rubber compound and though they will brake, the harder compound "could" wear out the braking surface faster than carbon specific pads.
    This question is the same as buying a Porsche and asking if you can put 87 in it to save a few dollars.
