    Sanwa bikes

I just fixed up a 25+ year-old Sanwa road bike for a friend. Shimano 600 components, never been maintained in the last 10 years, in incredibly good condition.

Does anybody know what the history of these bikes are? Are they Japanese? Korean? When did they go out of production?

I did a search with no satisfactory results.

    Thanks.

    Sanwa

I think they made a very wide range of stuff; I built up a Sanwa as a singlespeed a year and a half ago...that one was gaspipe, but nicely lugged and painted. Someone told me that they were sold in the '70s by a midwestern chain, but I don't remember which one...

    Japan

Found on the net: "They are what were known as UJBs, Universal Japanese Bikes. The only difference in all of them was the name."

Thank you for your quick replies. You used the phrase gas pipe?

    "Gas Pipe" meaning

Woah. Sorry, I haven't been on this board in forever, just got notified by the system.

"Gas pipe" was a derogatory reference to the fact that since these bikes were built out of mild steel (v. chrome-molybdenum steel) the tubes were usually substantially thicker than "real" road bikes and unbutted.

There's nothing at all wrong with that, it just meant that to have the same strength as something built out of, say, proper butted Columbus tubing, the "gas pipe" bike would be somewhat heavier.
This wheel's on fire/rollin' down the road
