    Apex 1 rear derailleur wobble

    I'm new to 1X... heck, I'm new to 11sp... so apologies in advance if this is "normal". I attempted to find the SRAM manual for this but had no joy.

    I have an 11sp, SRAM Apex 1 rear derailleur. With the derailleur de-tensioned (shifted to the small cog, and with the chain off the bike), the derailleur has a fair amount of wobble/play (inboard and outboard). It feels loose. But the bolt attaching it to the hanger is good and tight and the hanger itself is tight to the frame.

    Is this wobble/play built in to provide some flexibility to aid in shifting since it's a 1X system?

    If not, any ideas what the proper torque should be for the derailleur bolt attaching to the hanger?

    Normal. SRAM recommends 5-7nm. There user manuals and service manuals are very easy to find on their site. Service tab right at the top. Grease the threads when you install it.

    Yeah. Their site has diagrams, but I couldn't find anything for installation or adjustments on the Apex 1X to tell me if the inboard/outboard play was normal.

    So, it's by design?

    There is nothing about the movement. It just happens. The torque for the attachment bolt is clearly shown as is the need to grease it so you get the proper torque. Don't overthink this.

    Agree with cxwrench, it's normal. There has to be some play in that pivot to guarantee free movement of the derailleur no matter how tight the mounting bolt. The play becomes negligible when putting tension into the coil spring housed in that pivot and when the derailleur cage with the chain in it can stabilize the derailleur. Putting the chain back on your bike will do all that.

    Thanks to you both. I'll resist the "fix it till it's broken" part of me that wanted to throw a washer in there, and I'll leave it as-is.

    You should never attempt to out-engineer Shimano, SRAM, or Campy. They pretty much know what they're doing.

    I didn't think it was poor engineering, just maybe a QC issue.

    Hi,
    I've the same issue. I've noticed that higher groups derailleur have washer + springy washer and on my factorty installed Apex 1 I don't have them. If they would be there, like on higher groups, mostprobably there wouldn't be any play. Does it mean that they're missing or SRAM didn't include them on purpose for Apex 1? Is it worth installing washer from higher group?

    Yeah, like cxwrench said. Read through the thread. I had the same question. I can tell you now that with a year of riding the bike the play is not an issue. If anything, it helps the derailleur run quieter by alleviating some stress in the chain-line depending on what gear you're in. Just torque it to the proper setting and ride.

    Thank for clarifying that, just wanted to be sure that bike was properly mounted by bikeshop because I'm having issues with proper adjustment of deraileur.

    I've adjusted mech based on this movie, and on stand it's much better I'll try tommorow outdoor
