Which Bottom Bracket for Vintage Frame?

So...latest project is a vintage steel frame that I want to upgrade to SRAM Force or perhaps a lower-grade offering (Rival?) The frame is a late 80s vintage Specialized road frame. I assume that neither GXP or BB30 will fit. Correct? What are my choices when installing the newer groups? Does SRAM make a BB that will fit a vintage frame and work with the new parts, or will the parts work with the original bottom brackets that came with these vintage frames?

    Thanks in advance...

BB has to match the cranks and the frame, so you need a BB that is standard English thread and is compatible with whatever cranks you want. The original BB that came with that frame might have been square taper (ISO or JIS) or perhaps Shimano Octalink. Not sure about the latter as to what proprietary BB Shimano was pushing in that time frame.

Why wouldn't GXP work? That's what it was designed to work in. You need English GXP cups and whatever SRAM GXP crank you want to use.

Thank you both. Current BB is a Specialized square taper, vintage 1987. I'll take a closer look at the GXP BBs... Thanks again.

Remove the square taper and install the GXP. It will fit fine. The 30mm spindle will not fit.

I've done some upgrades to older bikes in the past, like a full Ultegra kit, crank included, in an old Schwinn Paramount for a customer.
