Can I use an FSA carbon steerer compression plug on an aluminum steerer?

I just found out last night that the annoying squeaking that I had been investigating for months was coming form my headset. I took the cap off an found that the star nut was broken and ready to pop out. I went to the bike store and asked for a compression plug since it seems like a more reliable system. They sold me an FSA plug for a carbon steerer and assured me it would work on aluminum. Has anyone heard or perhaps had any experience with carbon VS aluminum specific compression plugs? Is there a difference?

I have not heard of an aluminum specific plug, but I did install an FSA plug into my buddies aluminum steerer because a shop messed it up by pulling out the star nut and now a star nut just pulls right out...the plug works great.

If it fits and holds well enough to properly adjust headset tension before tightening the stem clamp screws, it's done its job and that's all that's needed. Beyond that, it's just there for retaining the decorative cap. For CF steerers, there may be a question of the plug provide strength/support of the steerer inside the stem, but that's not an issue for al steerers.
    ... 'cuz that's how I roll.

So the compression plug works great. I did order a Ritchey plug since the FSA one stripped before I even tightened it to spec. They make the FSA plug so that you tighten it using the hole on the cap with an alen key but the cap is very weak.
