Cup and Cone hub, locked but adjustable?

Trying to service a front wheel hub on an older Shimano wheel/hub. The lock nut is locked against the cone, but the whole lot (cone + lock nut) can be turned in/out by hand.

Is this right ... I'm presuming that the quick release lock it in place?

Do you actually have cone wrenches?
I work for some bike racers
I've got some bikes, some guns,
    and a bunch of skateboards

Yes, and there you go. I *presumed* that the cones were locked tight as I couldn't budge them by hand. But once I got out the wrenches, the lock nuts were indeed loose.

    Thanks.

That sounds odd. Typically if the lock nut (it's called that for a reason) is tight to the cone, neither will turn on the axle, they are essentially locked in place. This is a job that you HAVE to do right, if not, you'll trash the hub in a handful of rides.

Yes, see above. I thought they were locked, but weren't. My (novice) mistake.

I was typing mine up at the same time. Good luck with the hub service, and make sure you keep an eye on it for the first few rides. If it comes loose, you'll make a mess of it in a hurry.
