Dura ace 10 speed sti levers with 9 speed cassette?

Are the new DA 10 speed sti levers compatible with Shimano 9 speed cassettes?

    No

No!!!!, first you have 10 shift points on the 10 sp levers and only nine gears, theoretically it could work, just dont make the last shift, but in reality it wont. Plus the spacing for 10sp is different, meaning the 10sp levers pull a different amount of cable than the nine speed levers, the 10sp shifters would not move the der far enough on a nine speed cassette to make a good shift, small differences that add up to crappy shifting,

Besides if you spent all that money on the 10sp STI levers, just buy a cass, rear der and chain so it all works as it should, or you could just get 9sp dura ace levers, remember they still work awesome even though there is a 10sp version out

    thanks for the info

I have been noticing on the net that prices of 9 spd sti and 10 spd sti levers are now comng closer together. I'll buy one more set of 9 spd and then move on up to the silly new 10 standard for the next build.

You don't need a 10 speed rear derailleur. If you have 10 speed shifters all you need is a cassette and maybe a chain. A 9 speed dura ace rear derailleur will shift 10 just fine. The front 9 speed derailleur will also work with 10.

    Jtek Shiftmate

This company makes a little gadget that supposedly lets you use 10sp levers with 9sp cassettes. I haven't tried it, but Sheldon Brown seems to approve of it.

But I wouldn't bother with it in your case -- you might as well just get a 10 speed cassette and stick it on there. You won't need to change derailleurs. 9 and 10 speed derailleurs are interchangeable because they have the same cable-pull to movement ratio -- the indexing is done at the shifter.
