Cool Front derailleur Shimano 2203 broken on Trek SL 1000. What are my options?

I just bought a Trek SL 1000 used for $300.00.Im not going to ride it all the time it's more of a show piece. The front derailleur spring retainer tab is broken so it doesn't hold the tention. I am new to repairing my own bikes. I am mechanical inclined and have the required tools. My question is what is a direct replacement for the
Shimano 2203 currently on my road bike. thanks!

Not sure why you posted 2 photos of bikes that don't have anything at all to do w/ your question, but whatever. You can replace it w/ a 2403 or an R2030. Shimano has a compatibility chart at https://productinfo.shimano.com/#/co...453&acid=C-455 .

Of the new stuff, assuming this is a 3x8 speed drivetrain, Claris FD-2403/FD-2303 is your option. I'm not 100% sure which one is direct.

Should be cheap from your local LBS.

If I'm not mistaken, the newer front derailleurs with a max big ring of 50t will not work with the older systems that ran 52 or 53t chainrings. Of course, I'd like to see a picture of the actual crank and derailleur in question. I have had to use the Microshift 3x9 and 3x8 derailleurs to replace the old broken Shimano derailleurs.

I replied last night w/ options that will work straight from the Shimano compatibility chart...no further guesswork is needed.

If OP's Trek 1000 is running a double or triple with 52 or 53t big ring, then the 2403 or 2030 are absolutely NOT compatible. Neither is the 2303. You might want to take that up w/ Shimano. The OP had a 2303 on the bike originally.

ETA: Are you saying this because the bottom of the inner cage plate hits the middle ring? Shimano clearly states on their chart that the 2303 front derailleur works w/ the 2303 crank which has a 52t large ring as well as the 2030 which is 50/39/30.

Normally CX I never doubt anything you post, but this time I do. I've dealt with this SO many times. I keep the Microshift derailleurs in stock for just this reason. The tab on those old 2203's seam to sheer off a lot these days.

There is a chance that I have been mis-reading that as 2303 this entire time. So the inner cage plate is too deep and is designed for different size rings?

That is correct. The 2303 triple has a 50 big ring. The previous models had 52. Had a customer who brought me his bike after work was done at another shop. They put the 2303 derailleur on and it never worked right. I wrestled with it for a while (frustrated) and finally called Shimano Tech. Dude there said it just wonít fly.
The only derailleur that works is the Microshift, but the 8 speed version is hard as hell to find now. Iíve had success installing the 9 speed one on 8 speed bikes though. Works best with a 9 speed chain. Kind of hacky but better than replacing the whole drivetrain.
Itís not the M9. I think itís the 539. Or if youíre lucky enough, you can find a used 2203 on eBay. Slim chance though. I have a couple 9 speed in In the shop if OP wants one, PM me. Mine are braise on, so youíll need a clamp.

Dude. The 2303 will not work! You need the 2203 or the microshift r-538 or 539.

So, I stand corrected. It is the 2403 that is for the 50t. The transition from 52 to 50t triple really confused a lot of folks (obviously including myself). As long as it looks like the second derailleur picture I posted above all will fly.

I'd like to now apologize to s10aromeo and cxwrench and anyone else who read this thread. There are just too many twos, threes and zeros for my soft old mind to sort.
