    How do I tighten this 10s Shimano splined freehub? 2008 Cannondale CAAD9 R5 - WH-R550

    Hi,

The rear wheel on my Cannondale has been having freehub play for some time now. I've tried using an hex key to tighten the freehub, but to no avail. The wheel is a WH-R550 rear wheel.

The 11mm hex key I've tried is too big. The 10mm hex key doesn't catch. I had tried a 10mm hex key on another freehub (from a Giant OCR) and it had worked, but it seems like the splines on this Shimano wheel are preventing the hex key from catching.

Could somebody tell me how I could tighten this? I brought the wheel to a bike shop, Roy's Cycles in Brooklyn, but the mechanics there didn't seem like they knew what they were doing and told me to get a new wheel.

If the 10mm doesn't catch, then the fixing bolt is stripped.

You can't tighten it if it's stripped. You'd have to try an EZ out or drill out the fixing bolt.
Not worth the hassle on a 12yro budget wheel.

As the mechanics said.... get a new wheel.

Could you guys point out where the fixing bolt is stripped? This is the first time I've taken apart and inspected a freehub, so I'm not sure what to be looking for. The only things I see are the splines, which I thought looked normal.

Seriously? Look at the wrench interface on any screw/bolt. It should be obvious. The lighter parts in your photo look rounded off. They shouldn't.

Doesn't really matter what we see or don't see. You explained the exact problem

Clearly the key is fine. So the spline must not be.
