Releasing Brifter with No Cable Tension

I thought I had my new rear shift cable pulled and set in the shift and started downshifting. Any tips on how to get the shifter to release back to the top gear position?

Who knows? What kind of shifter do you have? Details son, provide some details.

As cx said, how about some details? Are you pulling on the cable while exercising the shifter? I'm really not clear on what your question is.

As CX and Kerry said, we need more info in order to answer this question.

Brand, model, when does this happen?
