    Shimano 10 speed cassette spacer

I know when using Shimano 10 speed cassette on Shimano hubs, you put the included 1mm spacer behind.

How do I know if I need it for other brand wheels or generic "Shimano/SRAM compatiable" freehubs?

Normally if you're using a shimano 10 speed cassette, you'll need the spacer regardless of the freehub manufacturer!

I think that you need it on every hub except the "old" 7800 DA hub that was made for 10 speed only.
(how often does Shimano really blow things?)

Instead of memorizing rules and exceptions or or depending on the advice of others, you can know how to decide for yourself.

For the lockring to work as designed the first sprocket of the cassette must overhang the freehub body slightly. This allows the lockring to compress the cassette before bottoming out against the freehub. It's analogous to how the stack height of the stem and spacers must be taller than the fork for threadless headsets.

Add or don't add spacers such that the front sprocket overhangs by about 1mm and you'll always be right.
