Shimano 6870 derailleur upgrade not working

I'm trying to upgrade to Shimano 6870 11 speed from 6770 10 speed without much luck. From everything I've read online, I should be able to replace my 6770 FD/RD with 6870 parts and everything should just work. However, it doesn't. With the (new) 6870 derailleurs, it acts like the battery is dead. No lights and no shifting. When I plug the 6770 stuff back in, all is well. However, all the articles I've read about the upgrade are from 4-5 years ago, so things may have changed.

I'm using 6770 shifters, a SM-EW67A junction at the handlebars (the old one with permanently attached wires for the shifters), an external battery, and a new internal B junction. I've never updated firmware on any of it, so whatever is on the old parts is what came on it when it was purchased in 2012.

I'm guessing it is probably a firmware issue, but don't want to spend $140 on the e-tube programmer if it isn't. Thanks in advance for any help.

You are going to need E-tube to do pretty much anything with DI2. It's not just plug and play. Everything needs a firmware update.

Yup. Firmware for sure. Two options.

    1. Find a shop or someone with the PC interface and update firmware
    2. Change out the external battery for the new internal one, new junction A and new charger and the charger doubles as a PC interface to update firmware and customize buttons, etc.

Thanks. Looks like I'll be picking up an e-tube programmer.

Unfortunately not. The only LBS that might have had one was a Performance and it closed today. A year ago, there were four locals, now there is one and they specialize in BMX and cheap stuff so I doubt they have a programmer.

By the time I drove to an out of towner and paid for them to flash the new and old stuff I'd probably be half way to the cost of the programmer. I wouldn't mind having one, the cost of the hardware is just a little silly for what you're getting. I'll check with my local club, but I've never heard anybody mention having one.

To close the loop on this for anybody else running antique Di2 parts, updating the firmware did the trick. The external battery holder (BMR1) was on firmware v. 1.1.1 After updating that and the other components, the 6870 derailleurs both work.

Getting the programmer to work took some doing though. The software requires the .net 3.5 framework, which doesn't want to install on my new Win 10 laptop. The software installed on my old Win 8.1 laptop, but the driver install kept failing for the hardware. Getting the proper driver from Shimano's website and manually installing it did the trick.
