Any standard road crankset will work. Just use 1 chainring on either the inner or outer postion. The only thing you need to buy is short stack BMX chainring bolts. They are usually $5-10 at an LBS. I prefer using a standard road crankarms because it's easier to get a good chain line with the two ring postions.

I used whatever happened to be lying around.

Cheap is good. Mine has a cheap Sakae (sp?) 165m crank. Works fine.

If you don't want top spend the $$ on chainring bolts,

just file some regular ones down or use spacers, if you have them.

I ditto what others have said and add that you should select one with sufficient BB choices to get a good chainline. I got brand new tiagra for $30 dollars. You Do not have to spend alot of $$
