    achilles pain

Getting achilles tendon pain, but only when stringing together several long days (like 80-100 miles per day on a tour) in a row.

Use Crankbrothers Candy pedals, SPD shoes, cleats all the way rear, and saddle height the same I have used my entire life (I'm 59).

Taping my ankle helps, with athletic tape run from under my foot around the back of my heel up to my lower calf, secured at both ends, but that's a pita to do every day.

Any ideas for what to do?

You've upped your mileage considerably over what your legs are used to, with no time for adaptation.

Or, your body has reached its limit of adaptability.

    Reduce the daily mileage.

and popping an achilles is even more painful, and takes 12 months post surgery to recover at your age. Something to consider.

    That was my only idea.

I had some achilles discomfort when I tried to 'correct' my foot's natural desire to pedal heal out by moving the cleats so feet were straight. Abandoned that experiment quickly and the discomfort in that area went a way.
So I suppose it could have something to do with foot/cleat angle.

It may well be age related. Calf / Achilles strength exercise may help.

My treatment would include anti-inflammatories, reduced usage/stress till it is remission, wait for pain to be away for a bit. Then back into service at about 30% of where you were with minimum jumps in rides & stretching till you return to full power.

Buying parts to hang on your bike is always easier than getting fit.

If you feel wimpy and weak, get out and train more, ya wee lassie!
