I wasn't trying to belittle or be insulting. My point was that very fresh asphalt can suck. I remember doing a loaded tour in Arkansas about 2.5 decades ago where we hit a stretch of about 20 miles of sticky new asphalt. Felt like the equivalent of a 15 mph headwind. And the tires were completely coated with crap afterwards.

If you are or were in the midst of a loaded tour in the App mountains, please share details!

Well, "green asphalt" didn't really fit...

That was a trip in the early/mid '80s. A week long trip south from Boone along the BRP to Asheville, backroads to Brevard, back up the BRP to Asheville, west towards Tennessee and then backroads back up through Banner Elk and into Boone.

I lived in Athens, GA from '76 to '89 and lived to bike tour every chance I got. My dad had retired to Boone in '81 so several of my trips either originated there or went through there but others stayed further south.
Life is short... enjoy the ride.
