The Great US Bike Shortage of 2020

    Whew... glad I got mine.

    From the NY Times:

Some bicycle shops in Brooklyn are selling twice as many bikes as usual and drawing blocklong lines of customers. A chain of shops in Phoenix is selling three times the number of bikes it typically does. A retailer in Washington, D.C., sold all its entry-level bikes by the end of April and has fielded more preorders than ever in its 50-year history.

As the coronavirus pandemic shrinks life in major American cities — limiting pastimes and discouraging use of buses and subways — hundreds of thousands of Americans are flocking to one of the most basic forms of mobility: the bicycle.

In March, nationwide sales of bicycles, equipment and repair services nearly doubled compared with the same period last year, according to the N.P.D. Group, a market research company. Sales of commuter and fitness bikes in the same month increased 66 percent, leisure bikes jumped 121 percent, children’s bikes went up 59 percent and electric bikes rose 85 percent.

By the end of April, many stores and distributors had sold out of low-end consumer bikes. Now, the United States is facing a severe bicycle shortage as global supply chains, disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak, scramble to meet the surge in demand.

“I have never seen anything remotely approaching this,” said Ryan Zagata, president of Brooklyn Bicycle Company, where sales have soared by more than 600 percent this year compared with the same period in 2019. “If you went into a store three weeks ago you could find a bike under $1,000. Right now shelves are bare.”

Well... for those who can't buy a bike, there's always the alternative I suppose:

    https://www.bikebiz.com/admiral-repo...-theft-claims/

Currently a 46% increase in reported bike thefts...

Keep 'em locked up and safe, folks.

Btw, I recently bought a State single speed. I tried ordering through their website but they were out of stock in the size/style I wanted. I ended up getting the last one Amazon had at the time. Since then, they've been out of stock as well. I think I timed it just right.

More people riding is good. More people wanting better cycling infrastructure is good. More people riding bikes with their kids is good.

Most won't keep riding, but some will. That will help LBSs stay open.

A downside of a bunch of idiots out there (most of whom will stop being idiots once they learn some things), and making it harder to get bikes (lower end mostly I would think), and harder to get fast service... I'll take that. Which is easy since I am not buying a bike and I do most all of my own work on the bikes.

My lbs is down to 16 or so bikes left on their floor and cannot seem to get anymore. This is actually a problem for me. My company gives me $500 per year (year ends May 31st) in sport and fitness health subsidies, covering up to 50% (so I spend $1k to get the full 500). Wife wants a bike, and I want a trainer for the Gym I am building (I split my garage, it is a giant L, so the top of the "L" has been framed out).

The bike she wants, she cannot get, and all the trainers are freaking sold out till who knows when.. I found a Tacx NEO 2t, but that is $1300 to $1400, more than I want to spend. I wanted the Wahoo Kickr, but those are all sold out... everywhere it seams.

It's been pretty crazy. I quit the Trek owned shop I had been at for 12.5 years and moved to an IBD the 3rd week in April. The Trek store was doing ok, but down 30-40%. The IBD I'm now at is up a TON. We have a line down the block all day every day and are 2 weeks out on service...and that's with a mechanic working a night shift. We're selling more electric bikes than ever...at least 6-8 a week. We're sold out of $500-700 bikes and can't get any more. Our phone rings off the hook all day.

Nice to see at least one bright spot amidst so much tragedy.

My LBS is like that.. tons of service calls. They are not allowing people into the store, they have a rope across the door, and the staff or either bringing people in one at a time, or bringing the bikes outside for customers to test ride (whatever stock they have left), but the service area is overflowing. I'm actually happy that they are busy as hell, their is more profit in service than sales.

How was the Trek store down while the IBD was up so much? Or was that just a case of the whole bike market flipping right as you moved jobs?

In any case, hang in there.

I went to two of the three bike shops in town last weekend, both were as cleared out as I've ever seen them. The one shop said that he can't even get any new bikes in that are in the $500-1000 range, there aren't any to be had. I rode a new Diverge while I was at the one shop, they are going to let me know if they can get any in my size. :-)

    There are others.

A lot of small farmers are seeing a boom in CSA buy in. Which is good, because a lot of them relied on restaurant sales and the CSA not only covers some of that, but also gets people nice food. Combine that with more home cooking.... much like bikes, if it lasts, great!

    Thanks!

I think it's because Trek wanted to do everything by appointment and my new shop isn't doing appts, you wait in line...we'll get it done when we can. Some local shops (including BIG ones) have flat stopped taking service in.
