Unhappy Greetings n Learning so looking for help

Hey everyone; I am new tot he sport and I am learning to work on my bike and my friend's bikes. I ve been doing general maintenance type stuff but right now I am stuff and can't figure it out.
Working on my friend's bike as he claimed to have a front derailer issue, turned out his shifter cable was not sitting properly on his shifter. I sat it properly on the chamber but now the low shifter stopped clicking and there is a a metal piece kinda sticking out... when I do try to click over I can see the plastic housing stretch. i do not see what I may have done but it does not look normal.... I can add pictures...I've been looking on how to take a shifter apart and put it back together...again I do not think anything broke, but that lever, its inner side, the right side has a piece of metal sticking out... been looking for diagrams or pics to no avail...
If there is anyone that can help me that would be much appreciated.

Put a new cable and housing on the bike and adj, spray some dry lube into the shifter, it will be ok.

That was part of the original project but now it looks like there is something physically wrong with the shifter.... without the hoods.... you can see a piece of metal sticking out on the right side of the left shifter and when i move the lever over I see the plastic housing expan, ready to break... It does not look normal... I can't find a picture to reference back to it either... but something is physically wrong i think... thanks....

Without seeing the shifter we can't help. Neither can duriel though he thinks he can. It's very easy to post photos, put some up so we can have a look at it. You also haven't told us what kind of shifter, which model...nothing. If it's Shimano it can't be taken apart and put back together, don't even try.

And of course we have another member posting service questions in general...please post in the proper section.

You have to be a member here for a while before you are allowed to post pics. In the meantime, just post them to a hosting site. Without pics, nobody has a clue what you are talking about.

You can post directly from something like imgur and the photos will show up fine.

Question: If you don't know what you are doing, then why are you fixing your friend's bike?

He's probably taking cx's advice and he's now carefully browsing through all the subforums to find the perfect one for his question.
