Neck pain while cycling, upper back pain the day after?

Okay so I have had this neck issue on and off over the years on different bikes. I thought I was getting neck pain on longer rides. The left side of my neck gets really stiff and causes me problems. I say I thought it was neck pain because yesterday it happened again but I was far from home so I had to just deal with it and keep going. It got really bad and I was having a tough time at the end of my ride. However this morning my neck doesn't hurt. My left upper back is killing though. Muscles are really stiff. Its the muscles above the shoulder blade on the left side. The right side hurts a bid but its mostly the left side.

For years I thought it was neck pain because I guess it radiates up to my neck when I'm riding. But now my neck isnt hurting but the muscles above my shoulder blade are really sore.

Anyone have ideas why this is happening? It happens on all my bikes. It has gotten better over the years but I first felt it this year a few weeks back when I went out for almost 100km.

Also any ideas what particular stretches may help before and during the ride?

    Thanks for any help

Heads are heavy. I have done lifting routines where I used the ball for long runs and that will teach you quickly how heavy the ole melon really is. When you are holding your body in suspension your head makes a narrow range of often underutilized muscles work really hard. It takes a while to build up the strength to hold your head comfortably for long periods in unnatural positions. Hang in there... No pun intended.

And a steaming hot bath after bringing your RBR thread to a fever pitch of self-destruction will cleanse and relax both body and spirit like you would not believe.
