    Shimano 7701's vs. Ksyrium Elites

I ordered a Bianchi San Lorenzo and it showed up this week with Shimano 7701's - supposed to have Ksyrium Elites on it. Do I take it home as is or demand to have the Ksyriums put?? I hear only great things about the Ksyriums and have heard nothing about the new Shimano wheelsets...

    Thoughts???

The 7701's are Dura-Ace wheels, but not the current model. The new model is the 7800. I have the 7700's the dark teal green version with spokes cross laces to the opposite side of the rim from which it is attached to the hub. The design put the nipples at the hub, thus moving some of the rotating weight to the hub, increasing spin-up rate. I am way too heavy for mine, broke a spoke recently, mine have 16-spokes per wheel. The 7701's are "racing" wheels. I would consider the Elites as every day, training wheels. weights are comparable. I was considering both these wheelsets. I got the 7700s because I could get them for $400 used, instead of $800 new, and that was less than the Elites (~$500) and were supposed to be stonger.

I am just wondering why they changed the wheels out, are they trying to move out "old stock?"

If the Bianchi came with Kysyrium SSC's, I'd demand a change but since it was supposed to be with Elites, I'd stick with the 7701's. 7701's are last years top Shimano wheelset. I have them on my LOOK and have zero complaints. They have a titanium freehub body and Dura Ace quility hubs. IMHO, there is nothing wrong with Elites, they just aren't the same quality as the 7701's.

    total weight

I believe there is almost no difference in total weight between the elites and the 7701's.

Weight is not the only determining factor is wheelsets. As I said there is nothing wrong with the Elites, but the 7701's are a better quality wheelset.

In fact I recently purchased a slightly used Y2003 set of 7701's - great wheels and very happy so far. I previously owned the M535's and had those for two years. I am a 177 lb rider and I never had a problem with the Shimano design. Never broke any spokes and these never had to be trued. I do like to ride hard on the NE roads here, so I can't say that I was easy on them.
