    stem rise & length

Rather than start a silly debate over the length of steering tube spacers, I thought I'd post a table that lists the additional rise obtained from stems with different angles and the change in horizontal length due to the angle. The table list values for an average length, 110mm stem. Longer stem stems will produce a bit more rise when flipped and shorter ones will have less. I left out a 73 (-17) degree stem since it offers no additional rise.

A table like this can be very helpful in predicting the stem angle and spacer combination required to produce a particular handlebar height, if the head tube and headset height are known.

I also made an Excel program that can calculate the stem rise and length for any stem.

Whenever a stem is flipped the increase in rise is likely to be a few milimeters less than shown due to the fact the center of a stem's extension rarely intersects the center of the stem clamp. When a stem is flipped from 80 to 100 degree, for instance, a few millimeters of the theoretical rise will not occur due to the off-center location of the stem extension. Different brands of stems also vary in the height of the stem clamp, which can affect the rise by a few milimeters, if you're comparing two different brands. Most stem clamp heights are in the 35-40mm range.

Well, the table doesn't post properly! Anyone know how to edit it to produce columns?
