It's sad what has become of this forum. I have over 10,000 posts - mostly from over 10 years ago, when there was a lot of traffic on this site.

No one needs to get personal, but at least one person posting on this thread likes to dish out abuse on bike forums. He uses the same name on three different forums.

I never get personal, but I have been banned from two cars forums for telling the truth about the poor quality products made by Factory Five.

Well I gues that unnamed person isn't I since I don't belong to 3 forums.

I was banned from a car forum because I posted that I was going to replace it. Had me banned within 5 minutes!

Fact is, this thread (and threads like it) pop up with alarming frequency. It's not good for a site to keep scaring off members when the same elder/prolific members have piss-poor attitudes time after time, year after year.
Not saying you dont have point, but the hysteria to regulate isn't gonna make a better world .

I think you are over reacting.

Good to know those checks are still going through!

I'm really surprised that I've never caught a ban or even a timeout. Lord knows I've inflicted some butthurt.

rudge, I see you have only been here a short time, so you never experienced RBR in its prime, rather than the dumpster fire it is now. I don't think that civility is a bad word, and expecting (and occasionally enforcing) civility makes sense to keeping a forum healthy. If you look at the active threads here hardly any of them have to do with cycling and most of those have turned caustic.

There are still THREE forums that discuss bikes?

Judging by the traffic in here I would have thought everyone moved on to discussing electric cars and gender-neutral bathrooms.

hmmm, sounds like selective memory. in its 'prime,' two of RBR's most popular forums were the Lounge and Podium Girls.

one was just the cyber-equivalent of the Cool Kids Club in high school and the other was mostly a collection of soft-porn. neither were cycling-content focused.

you can avoid 99% of 'caustic' posts by simply avoiding PO. it's really easy to not click on those posts. for the rest, there's an ignore feature for posters you find objectionable.

self-moderation solves most of the issues you have.

I look at 4 bike forums. This one, bikeforums.net, weight weenies, and the paceline forum, that was the serotta forum, many years ago.

Weight weenies has a lot of discussion on the latest tech and of course the lowest weight or most aero bikes. Many posters are from European countries.

Bike forums seems to be about getting your garage sale bike up and running.

The paceline forum has some good tech advice and a lot of old guys like me. We may be slow, but at least I'm using the latest tech, except for disc brakes and tubeless tires - have no use for either.

This forum has so few postings, it's not about much of anything.

I've only been a member here since May 2014. While there were definitely people here who are rough around the edges, there was plenty of helpful advice going around. I took it as an initiation of sorts - just like being the new employee around seasoned veterans. Some are bulldozers (knowledgeable people who like the throw their weight around) and some are balloons (people who know nothing and pretend to know it all).

One sub forum that was usually quite civil was Wheel & Tires. Unfortunately, two of the most helpful people there, Mike T. and DCGriz are gone now into forum retirement. Not sure whether they left because they became busier or just had enough. Wheels & Tires is all but dead without them.

That being said, every sub forum is definitely less active than back in 2014 - except maybe for P.O. which is always hopping along.

IMO, the interwez is really a sh8thole of human discussions!
Sure there are gems of knowledge here and there, but for the most part, the internwebz is a great enabler of shytte of humanity. But honestly, if you walk into a restoom, you should expect funny smells, right. So no one should be complaining! Hold your breath, take your sh8t, wipe your ass, and get out!

Cx doles out Tough Love when it's needed.

Sometimes, I think, people knowingly post questions about tire pressure in General Cycling Discussions instead of Wheels & Tires just because they crave cx's tough love, in the same way all chains crave ProLink.

seen many guys who get out of the toilet and then just walk right to the exit, not even a sprinkle of water to wash their hands. Wow. I imagine these are the ones that pick their noses leisurely at work

I've seen this many times at work and they are usually guys in suits. Poop, wipe and run. I guess they think their poop doesn't have bacteria like the rest of us common folk.
