Varia radar drains Garmin Edge battery

I picked up a Varia this spring and find it very useful. I never paid attention to how it affect battery life on my Edge. I did my first century today using the Varia and at the end the Edge 820 battery was down to 13%. Normally I'd be at 50-60%. I wonder if its the extra communication with the Varia or the additional screen usage. Anyone else see this?

Varia hasn't had that dramatic of an effect on battery for me in 3+ years of usage but I think my backlight is set to pretty much never go on.

Based on a web search this seems to be a common issue. I bought a small top tube bag that I can use for a auxiliary USB battery for long rides.

Everyone I know with a Varia has noticed much shorter battery life on their Garmin. My Garmin lasts much longer when i go mountain biking and don't use the radar.

I did another century this past Saturday. It was in a much more rural area so I was expecting that battery life would be better with less radar "alarms". The battery was at 10% at the end. Thus ride was about 15 minutes longer so maybe just having the Varia on drains it

I don't notice effect on the battery life of an Edge 520 when using a Varia.
