bar tape is a consumable, like tires, or napkins or toilet paper imho! IIRC the pros get their bar tape changed almost daily in the big Tours.

so I buy the cheapest and replace often, like 7-10$ per. I also prefer soft/matte finish over glossy, so mine gets dirty fast. However, I only run white on one of my bikes, for reasons of silly colour matching vanity. I run 2 layers of tape always, with gel underneath. Thus I can re use old, damaged dirty tape underneath.

    Fizik Microtex...

if it wasn't for this stuff, I wouldn't use white tape.

    this.

though the gloss variety looks good only on certain bikes. i'd go with the regular microfiber fizik on most.

I personally like cork tapes for comfort but I have find when it comes to white, synthetic tape is easier to keep clean. The Fizik stuff that other mentioned, is a decent choice. Keeping your white tape too clean may lesson your road cred though

Another vote for Fizik - I use the perforated type.

At the bottom of my list is Lizardskins. That stuff is horrible even at 1/3 the typical highway robbery price.

Another Fizik user here. It's been a long time since I've even considered anything else.

The old race bike wears Cinelli cork ribbon in white to be period correct. Buffing it up with a rag moistened with dish soap or citrus degreaser cleans it up pretty well. It gets replaced every year, anyway, same as the black cork ribbon on the commuter. Cork deforms better than the other materials, so wraps on nice and smooth. It absorbs shocks just enough so the hands don't feel beat up at the end of a ride. Works well with thin racing gloves. Reasonably priced.

I have white, black and blues ones on my bikes, and I like them a lot.
They are super easy to clean - even grease comes right off.
The tape on Cervelo is over one year old, and it's still sparkling white.
The one slight downside (for people who ride with no gloves) is that it gets pretty slippery when it's wet.

I also have Lizard Skin tape on two other bikes, and they are very hard to keep it clean

to be clear, neither bike (above) looks like it has the gloss variety of fizik, which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

i just looked at it again, and the white is a definitely glossy tape, as it has a shinny finish to it.
I believe you are right about the blue one though, as it is has the metallic blue finish, not the glossy blue.
I think they only make black, white and red in solid glossy colors.
The white one doesn't appear to be shiny in the photo but it is.
The red one and the black ones do show the shiny finish much better in the photo.
I also check my stock pile (I usually order several of them at a time from Probikekit), and the last one I have is also a white glossy tape.

I used no-name white vinyl handlebar tape on my wife's bike (past tense, cuz once I found this stuff I never had to clean or re-wrap the bars again and it's been years) -

It costs like $5-$9 (easy to find on ebay) - it's the right amount of stretchiness, it's padded with a smooth but not particularly glossy finish, and it never gets dirty AT ALL. Some people say vinyl gets slippery when your hands sweat - I think if anything it feels grippier when it gets damp.

Here's a photo of what it looks like, and a not-great photo of how it looks on my wife's white Scott.

I use the Fizik 2mm stuff. It is the only white tape that stays clean. The PRO stuff turned a dirty white within a week, Cinelli and Deda cork do the same. The performance tape started to fall apart after 2 months and developed a stink too. Even the Fizik needs to be changed after 3-4 months. I store my bikes in the garage in a high humidity environment. The bikes gets put away wet and the HB tape is often still damp 24 hours later. The bar tape should be replaced every 3-4 months or the bars will corrode.
