    Bakersfield, CA

Spent the last ~2 weeks here for training for work. (Other than a trip to Huntington Beach for the weekend to hang out with the fam)

Kind of a sh!t-hole, but turns out if you drive ~45 min in a few different directions there are some pretty cool areas. Wish I had brought a real camera...but here are some shots I took with my iphone that turned out decent for phone-pics.

I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

No go away, or I shall taunt you a second time.

No...but since you mentioned it, I had the following conversation with 3 different people while I was there...

random person: have you been to any basque restaurants here?
    me: no
random person: you should go to one, they've been around forever. But, they really aren't that great, but you should try one.
me: ummm ok, I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

Go to any Country Music clubs? Are your pictures of the Angeles National Forest? Frazier Park, Fort Tejon? If so, you probably drove through that idyllic berg nestled not far from the hills, the Beverly Hills of the Central Valley, the town of Maricopa.
Mapie is a conventional looking former Hollywood bon viveur, now leading a quiet life in a house made of wood by an isolated beach. He has cultivated a taste for culture, and is a celebrated raconteur amongst his local associates, who are artists, actors, and other leftfield/eccentric types. I imagine he has a telescope, and an unusual sculpture outside his front door. He is also a beach comber. The Rydster.

Some of those are on highway 178 on the way up to Lake Isabella. Great riding ... on the motorcycle. I actually wanted to make my way up to Kernville, because it looked interesting, but it was part of a loooong ride and I knew I wanted to make it to Red Rock Canyon on the other side of the mountain before sundown.

Missed it by about 30 minutes.

And Mappy, this one's for you:

I was born in Taft (and my dad grew up in Maricopa), and I do NOT miss that at all. Everyone living in Taft would say that the place sucked but it was close to nice places--only two hours to the coast or the mountains!

Went to Buck Owens' last night at the request of a coworker. It was actually kinda cool. Lots of good pictures/memorabilia of the old country/western scene.

First couple pics are in Los Padres national forest. The others were 178/kern river/lake Isabella. I did a ton of driving while I was there, pretty sure I passed through Maricopa at some point.

My mother actually grew up in Taft, this was my first time ever in the area. After spending half a day in Taft, I called mom just to say thank you for getting the he!! out of there before you had me

Being a former San Diegian I used to think that until I found out they feed all of the West. And then feed the whole country when Florida shuts down their growing season.

The drive from Bakersfield to Barstow on 58 is a pretty cool route/ride.

that looks like the Taft are. It is a pretty amazing place when you think of all the food grown in the valley and all the oil and gas produced on the edge.

I was out there to visit coworkers in early March. The drive up 33 from Ventura, through Ojai was pretty cool.
