    I guess it boils down (get it... boils down?) to your definition of a recipe. French bread has a fairly simple and shelf stable list of ingredients and the proportion of the main two are not precise (owing to ambient conditions) yet certain procedures and care need to be followed in order to obtain a crusty yet chewy loaf as opposed to a giant thick cracker.
