I bought a BD bike once that I swear is an exact copy of a KHS frame, or at least made by the same plant. If you're an experienced rider, you know what sizing works for you. With a new rider though, I think it would be more important to go and actually try riding several bikes from local shops. When it comes to hardtails on the lower end, I honestly don't believe there to be a huge difference between most of the brands, and I hate most of the local shops, so I generally buy online or used.

I personally don't see a problem with BD as much as I see a problem with big brands not advertising what you're getting. Get a Trek 1.1. They don't tell you it's a cheap taiwanese frame when you walk into the bike shop do they? Nope. Not to mention some bike shops will sell you a '105 level' bike when all it has is the 105 RD. So BD is doing nothing more than the LBS. Yeah the comparison prices are a little crazy but they still sell good stuff for what you're paying. I bought my wife a bike from there. Showed up at the door and in 3 hours she was out riding. I don't mind wrenching at all, in fact I prefer to wrench my own bikes. Should I ever get in to cross I'll just get something from there unless Performance has something. LBS's put a sour taste in my mouth more than once, but enough that I'd rather just deal online. Honestly OP, if it's your friend's first bike then help him out. I'm sure you could figure out a size. He wants something new and has a budget. That's most people in the US. I'd love a new car because I've never driven a new car off the lot that was mine, and I've been driving for 19 years. But I don't mind getting a 'budget car'. It's just a mode of transportation. The same way that BD sells bikes. So does Target, Costco, Walmart, insert name here.
If he wants to ride help him get a bike. Help him get it set up. Help him true the wheels. If it comes from BD so be it. Let him ride the hell out of it because I'm willing to bet that his next bike won't come from BD. Not because they're good or bad or whatever, but because he'll know exactly what he wants and he'll hopefully have more knowledge and understanding of cycling in general.
If you're reading this, you're not riding enough.

    Meh.

Bd isn't that much different than any other bike brand. No better, no worse.

They are cheaper by way of selling direct, and if you are good or even adequate with a wrench, then have at it.

If you aren't good at wrenching or don't know how to adjust a derailleur or a headset, maybe you should avoid them. If you aren't certain what size bike you need, you should avoid them. If you are the kind of person who will be haunted by a 1 cm difference in top tube length (should I have gotten the 56 instead of the 55????) don't get a BD bike.

Because they sell direct, they tend to piss off some bike shops. Which is silly, because bike shops generally don't give a sh!t about my latest ebay find which they didn't sell me.

I have an inkling that at least some of the crabon frames used by BD, Performance, whatever are actually previous models of LBS/name brands. As in: Performance buys a crabon mold of a discontinued, say, Fuji, and rebrands it as a different machine.

BIkes Direct wears fur, and thinks you should too. Bikes Direct even clubs baby seals.
