Camera Q: wide angle adapter + wide aperature = soft focus

I bought a wide angle (.66x) lens for a new video camera and noticed last night that it would also fit my 50mm f1.8 lens for my DSLR (first!). Anyways, when I shot at a wide aperture (1.8-3.5) with the adapter on, the picture turns out soft even even manually focusing. Smaller apertures and the focus is good, I was just wondering what causes it to be soft at large apertures?

I'm by no means an expert but it's been my experience that most lenses are softer wide open. Plus, you're using an adapter going on a lens, so I'd think you would lose quality anyway.
