It didn't actually power the plane. It was a working reactor, but the experiment was just to test the feasibility of carrying a reactor with the necessary shielding, etc. As you noted, it proved impractical. Some engine designs were tested on the ground, but the programs were cancelled pretty early on.

Recent talk by the Russians has revived discussion of cruise missiles powered by a nuclear ramjet, a truly horrendous idea that the U.S. experimented with and abandoned in the early 60s. Look up "Project Pluto" if you want to know more.

Well, wow. Ep 4 was excellent, but also a really difficult watch. Particularly if you like dogs.

And the whole idea of 'bio-robots', i.e. waves of humans beings clearing the most radioactive area near the core building of graphite control rod fragments in 90-second shifts, very likely at the cost of a significant part of their lifespans... just blows the mind.

If you weren't afraid of nuclear power before this, you will be now. Which is a bit of a shame, as the Soviet RBMK reactors were an outlier illustration of exactly how NOT to do it. As was the resulting cover-up.

Overall, Chernobyl is a well-done, gripping drama through and through... ep 3 was the only slightly weak one so far, and it was still better than most things on television.

Saw Part 5. And, they nailed it. A really satisfying conclusion to a truly excellent mini-series. Best thing I've seen all year so far, really.

And strangely enough, considering the material isn't what anyone would call 'uplifting' in nature the perfect antidote to the massive disappointment that was the final season of Game of Thrones. Hmm.

It seems to be having a big effect overseas, too. The Kremlin is apparently up in arms about it, so much so that they've engaged in a campaign to undercut it. And, of course, a Russian 'counter-narrative' TV production of the events of Chernobyl is underway, except in THIS one, the blame for the accident is laid upon 'American spies and saboteurs'.

Kinda further reinforces the HBO series' "What is the price of lies?" monologue, if unintentionally. And it shows that post-Soviet Russia has plenty of the 'Soviet' still in it, at least at the government level.

    Sadly.

My wife really wanted to see this so we signed up for the 7-day HBO trial with Amazon. Watched the first episode last night. I started out a bit slow for my taste but I will keep an open mind. I also found the British accents irritating. Any decent actor should be able to learn a Russian accent by watching episodes of Rocky and Bullwinkle when Boris and Natasha are on
