    Chronic Back Pain Anyone?

    What do you do for relief? I know the traditional saying that I always hear is take some Motrin and a hot shower and rest....but srsly...motrin doesnt touch me...

    I have 4 partially herniated discs between the last 4 lumbar vertabrae and first sacral... This week i was sitting at work leaning over and it basically just popped....meaning it just started hurting for no reason. The pain basically makes me walk funny, and not want to sit in one position for very long.

    ANy suggestions other than getting my vicodin/soma refilled? Those inversion tables? Pistachio salad?

    Have you worked with a physical therapist? My dad has the same problem, not as bad as yours it's only 1 disc, he has a series of exercises he does. It seems to help him.

    I have not...i probably should see my Dr. sometime soon about it. Being in school put a damper on spending lots of time at the physical therapist...now that im in the so called "real world" i should get on that.

    Crap..i just realized that my health care plan for next year will require me to pay out of pocket for anything "non-preventative". ugh.

    This is frustrating because part of my back issues stems from being a big guy...so to lose weight, i would like to be active....shooting pains down my leg prevent activity without lots of vicodin/percoset....grrr...

    Gentle stretching helps me quite a bit. Finding a comfy area on the carpet and about five minutes goes a long way.

    Sorry, that's a tough one. What does your doctor/physical threrapist say? I'm 43 and work at a job that requires a lot of repetitive lifting of moderately heavy to very heavy objects. I'm currently out of work with a lumbar sprain and just had an mri. I'm also doing physical therapy which consists primarily of stretching the muscles of the trunk, the hips, the quads and hamstrings. I don't mean to repeat the obvious, but you definitely need the guidance of a physical therapist. Just by palpating the area they can diagnose rigidity in specific muscles which can throw the alignment of your spine out of wack, which is compounding your problems.

    Another thing you must work on is body awareness, what's causing your condition to be aggravated. I understand that you may be well past the point of managing your pain without outside intervention. If you are able to manage your pain, I think tai chi might help you tremendously if you can find a decent instructor. The whole idea is about directing your energy from the center of your body, relaxing your body, increasing suppleness, balance, posture, and just having a mind/body connection which may help you avoid pain.

    I apologize in advance if you've heard a lot of this before. I don't know if I have any structural damage (other than normal degenerative arthritis, age) but when I had the initial spasms back in February, I was like 95% paralyzed for three days, you know, a half hour to get from the bed to the bathroom. It was a life changing experience for me. I hope you find relief.

    Lot's of Vicodin

    I take Vicodin, Soma, it works OK. I just had the surgery so far it is improved. I tried everything opiates work the best. Just be careful they are very addictive.

    i had really bad whiplash resulting from a bike related incident (which i already told you about). i found that core strength workouts really really helped. also, get a yoga ball and lay on it (on your back) and stretch out for a couple minutes every few hours. that helped me a lot.

    Thats a good idea, i was planning to get one to do some core workouts...maybe ill stop by somewhere today and pick one up...

    Lumbar Microdisectomy

    It was a 1 hour surgery they take out a small piece of the bone and trim away all the herniated disk. I opted for a stitch so it does not come back so far so good...

    I was suffering from the sciatic nerve pain from the herniated disk it was so bad I could not even drive my car, so I suffered for a year before giving in to the surgery I wish I would have done it sooner. Good luck to you.

    In all seriousness I notice with weight gain there is more back pain. Something about my spine having to carry around a 12pk instead of a 6pk.

    Join a pilates class or buy a workout DVD. That **** will kick your ass while it builds core strength.

    I wouldn't recommend trying it until your pain subsides, though.

    However it is difficult to get your recommended exercise when you cant move

    My wife can't do pilates - says it's too hard on her back. She came home one night practically crippled. She's has chronic back problems, and has to be really careful.

    4 herniated discs?!? Good gawd, man....my back hurts just from typing that.

    I'm not a doc, but I'm not sure there's much you can do about it. My brother swears by the stretching. I lost some weight a few years back and that helped with my lower back pain, which is now pretty much gone.

    Unfortunately, the lower back pain has migrated to my upper back. It seems to be a product of sleeping on my side and stress. Nothing seems to help, either. I just wait for it to go away on its own.

    I can see how that would happen, especially with Pilates becoming so popular. If you don't have a good teacher, it's easy to get hurt.

    New, an inversion table is about $300, and that might just be something to give a shot. It should help, if not heal.

    I don't have any herniated discs. I do, however, have some back pain. Dr. says its muscle spasms. A few physical therapist visits and keeping up on the stretches have been pretty good for me.

    Ice instead of heat, too. It seems like the heat feels good when it is on, but as soon as you remove it, the releif is gone. Ice, while unpleasant for the first couple of minutes, actually helps.

    I have a herniated C-6 in my upper back and 2 bulging disc on each side of it from an auto accident in costa rica. I threw it into debilitating situation after a wipeout surfing. I was bed ridden for 2 weeks and could not sleep on my side for 3 months. With serious apprehension i chose to consult a chiropractor. He had me pain free in 4 months. I still go once a month for a tune-up. I also do massage and own a hot tub (which helps a ton). I understand ppls apprehension for chiro - but it doesn't hurt. It exasperates the discs. Once the correction is done - you might lie on a vertebrae table that will roll your spine moving each vertebrae. That helps with the compactness. I'm not trying to start a chiro debate - all i am saying is it worked great for me. I just did a 45 mile very hilly ride yesterday at 19.1mph - and my back was fine - the hot tub was clutch afterwards.

    If you have a Play it Again Sports (or similar) nearby, go check there. I regularly see them for about $150-200 used. The ortho I used to work for was a firm believer in these things.

    nK...I am a pretty big guy too...lots of sports led to my 2 lower degenerative discs. I tried accupuncture, cortizone/steroid shots, massage therapy, chiropractic care, etc...my doctor told me surgery was an option, but back surgery at the time was only 60-70% success rate....and the other 40% were sometimes worse condtion after surgery...a chance I wasnt willing to take.

    At any rate, my cousin is a physical therapist, and recommended the book "Treat Your Own Back" to me. Click here for the Amazon link....for $10, it was the best money I ever spent...read the reviews...almost all of them are good. The book was written by a doctor who has extensive research on backs...tells you all about your back, informs you what causes back pain, then tells you how to get rid of it. A pretty easy read...not a huge book, but definitely informative. I had tried everything without success and could barely walk from my sciatica pain...my whole foot was totally numb. After 2-3 weeks of doing the exercises in this book, I was 90% pain free. May not work for everyone, but I have since recommended it to 4 people and 3 of the 4 had the same results as me so it may be worth a try for you. Hope this helps! Chris
