What am I missing here, if the plane can take off with the payload attached in an attempt to relocate due to bad weather, what's keeping it from taking off, flying above the bad weather cloud and launch the [email protected] thing?

Because some thunderstorms are taller than a conventional jumbo jet's (or the Stratolaunch's) maximum altitude ceiling. Some supercell t-storms grow as high as 60,000 to 75,000 feet.

So when we say planes can overfly bad weather, it's more like they can overfly MOST bad weather, not all.

Not to scare you, but plenty of regular passenger jets carry in excess of 100 tons of fuel.

I should've said, why not fly away till it clears the bad weather area and launch the payload? IOW, it doesn't have to land at the alternate location and then take off again to launch. 89.gif

I think so. Overfly the bad stuff that you can and launch, or fly away from the bad stuff you can't overfly and still launch. Win-win.

Yes, far from all jets, but more jetliners have a fuel capacity in excess of 100 tons than you'd think... Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing 777, Boeing 747, McDonnell Douglas MD-11, Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Airbus A350, and Airbus A380 (the A380 can carry more than 250 tons of fuel, btw).

You're right in that jet fuel is not (usually) the same as rocket fuel, but some rocket engines use kerosene + liquid oxygen (the 1st stage of the Saturn V, for example), and jet fuel is pretty much kerosene plus a few additives. So, not always dissimilar.

Then there are methane + liquid oxygen rocket engines, which Space X uses. Methane is the major component of natural gas, which we use every day, though not with zero risk. But, the number of accidents caused by nat gas every year is quite small compared to how often it gets used in homes and elsewhere.

To be sure though, there are some rocket fuels that do carry a very significant explosion risk. Hydrogen peroxide, for example, can be made to explode catastrophically if exposed to even a minute amount of the wrong kind of impurity (such as iron rust).

But, I don't think you'll have to worry about this much, as there should be no need for a Stratolaunch plane to hang around your local airport with its rocket payload attached (even if it *can* do that). It would likely just fly from the airstrip/facility where the rocket was loaded onto it, launch the rocket, and land back at the same place. No real need to lug the rocket around the country.

It really just looks like something out of a 1950 nationalistic comic book front page!

With the coming of the end, with climate change, I can't see how burning more fuel on BS is really going to help anything.

yeah, Paul Allen's money and Burt Rutan's aeronautical design skills couldn't possibly create anything worthwhile.

Scaled Composites is just a bunch of mopes pretending to know what they're doing...Stratolaunch is a joke and will never achieve its mission goals.

don't even bother to look at their other aircraft, they're all duds too.

Right, because we can't control the global climate even if we want to.

Putting things like weather and communication satellites in orbit isn't BS.

And while climate change is definitely real, the space industry is pretty far down the list of things causing it.

So much winning, this would be really good 6 miles in the air, with 10 more crewmen on the plane?

The Stratolaunch plane won't be carrying Space X's Dragon capsule, as it is designed to be carried into orbit via conventional launch by the Falcon 9 rocket (which is too heavy for the Stratolaunch plane to carry even if someone wanted it to).

And yes, it's scary/disappointing that that test Dragon capsule exploded, but that's exactly why you do (unmanned) tests, to find and eliminate the flaws before you put astronauts aboard.

We actually do have a "rocket scientist /engineer as member" here. I doubt he has been back for a long time, but I am going to send him a note with a link to this thread! Meanwhile, I am going for a ride, when I get back, Ima bring some popcorn!
    Of course I'm sure...that doesn't mean I'm right.....

if true, remember that the Aircraft used in 1903 by the Wright Brothers flew EXACTLY ONCE. The Wrights took time off to refine the design thus resulting in the Wright III flyer, the first practical (fully controlled) aircraft.

Also remember, we have no idea of what collateral tech might have come from this endeavor. It took a bit for Jonas Salk to come up with a viable polio vaccine, byt today's version bears little resemblance to the one that protected me in the 1950's.

R&D is not always linear with a nice ribbon & bow.
