As a 56 year-old burnt out accountant, drone photography sounds like a job I could do for a while. Get in while the getting is good and barriers to entry are fewer. Sure, most likely the bread and butter would be boring - weddings, real estate listings come to mind. But you're outdoors and the possibilities are limitless - outdoor adventures, any sort of competitive contests, wildlife, the possibilities are limitless. Maybe provide traffic updates for news channels if you want to think bigger.

I think I have decent photographic skills, but when it comes time to production and putting it all together I would hopefully be able to bring in others to do that stuff. But I'd knock on the doors and do the marketing to get the business. I bet there's a lot of untapped $$$ in the industry.

I always thought I could teach for a few years in the twilight of my career, but from what I understand that industry can be quite political and you have to smooch the right sphincters.

Nothing like the buzz of a drone at a CX race to ruin the atmosphere of mud, cheers and beers...

    Learn how to repair electronics

I have a DJI Mavic Pro (the original), and I have replaced the gimbal, numerous gimbal cables, many many blades (those are easy). Trees are not your friend.... Sensors are front facing, and downward, but not up or rear, so when you set auto track on a target, it may reverse or fly up into things....

I won one in a raffle a couple months ago but still haven't set it up... I think it could be some fun but not really sure it will keep my interest more than 5 minutes. Need to look into registering / permits / etc.

I hope Kage has a SAM missile system in his doghouse.

You're thinking too small. Drones are already being used to survey landscapes and structures. For example, you can do multiple flights across a bridge to make a blueprint (accurate to 1/8th inch or less) that digitally removes the cars so you don't need to to close the bridge. My company is about to use a drone to complete a radiation scan of an abandoned uranium mine - saving 100s of man-hours. We also use them for pre- and post-reclamation surveys on pipeline breaks.

    Weddings shmeddings.

You do need an FAA license for professional work and special permits on USFS land.

I wish I had a shot gun to take down the one that annoying buzzed overhead while I was floating in an alpine lake a couple years ago.

… the peace and quiet of the discharging gun followed by the sound of a drown person forced under water by the recoil..

And an act of god from the FAA gods when you want to fly near an airport, although DC areas are mostly off limits.. I get a giant red blob over DC.. restrictions for flying near bases (we have many), federal buildings (we have many) and the Whitehouse (we don't care about that one ). Most of the State and Local parks have individual policies as it relates to drones, some land managers are okay for events (like the mountain bike races), but don't care for it for recreational use (also known as practice).

Oh, and as for the OP.. drone flight time in extreme cold weather is significantly reduced.. don't lose your new toy, stick close to home, and don't trust the automatic return to home, it does it's calculations, but sometimes gets it wrong on the remaining battery and flight time to return home... ask me how I know... (DJI Mavic Pro original). Fortunately I was following my wife on her kayak and she saw it go down.. 2 feet from the waters edge in someones back yard.. so she retrieved it for me.. and another gimbal cable needed replacing.

If I believe the net, it is a 2018 (low end "smartie"... I'm NOT A $500+ phone person).

I understand the limits of "back" My 50 year rotary dial still works per it original "mission". My 25 year Window98 can't naturally detect a thumb drive!

DJI had to foresee this on "budget" drone... and prolly has the resoures to bridge the gap (I opinion), especially for a holiday launch... or release "back" software.

    Old man grumble!!!!

New phone on Thursday (because I am weak and caved)!!! (could not find a bend over and spread 'em smiley)

I think you missed the point. Android support for 32 bit arch is ending this year, and that is for legacy devices and I don't know of any manufacturers, even cheap ones using 32bit arch CPUs anymore. At the same time, app developers would have to maintain 2 separate branches of development for the the different architectures, in addition to their regular ones (laptops/pc/intel_amd type devices). Phones and Tablets are general ARM based. So from a developer perspective and a cost perspective, it makes no sense to maintain a 32bit branch of the software as it effects only a fraction of a tiny percentage of the overall user community.

I blame the Russians, Ukraine, the Democrates, and the French (because who doesn't like blaming the French)… a new phone is delayed ONE MORE DAY!

The Universe does not me to have/fly a drone! Old man grumble!

thanks for the kind words, but it's a struggle it a blend of copy & paste, autofill and speech on Google! Spelling is hard!

Physically, it's slow but more steps forward than back.

The DRONE was to be a distraction!!! Getting a new phone is too much distraction!!
