And you remember this because it was recent, or just because it was so memorable?

Egg drop is now a comfort food, especially when I'm ill (my chicken soup).

It was indeed memorable as it was my first trip to San Fran (or anywhere west of east Texas). Memorable inasmuch as up until then, eating at a sit down restaurant even back home would have been a special event and home eateries would have had much more "vanilla" menus!

Many firsts on that trip, but what sparked the post was surfing the web and noticing that a local "Chinese" restaurant now delivers.

Also, I'd kinda hoped the thread would spark firsts from others.

When I was a kid, most grocery stores were "vanilla" as well. Then, a local market (now long gone) became famous for offering "extras" like halibut or lobster tails or kiwi fruit, items now common in even modest markets!

I consider myself fortunate that I was exposed to a diverse diet early on. Despite access, I've noted many younger people in my orbit "reverting" to burgers, chicken and fries.

First time for escargot, first time for sushi, first time for saffron rice...
