    Ford Unveils Electric Mustang SUV

Yup, you read that right... it's a an electric Mustang crossover SUV. The world doesn't make sense anymore.

Purists won't dig it, for the obvious twin reasons of 'Mustangs aren't SUVs' and 'Mustangs aren't electric', but... the specs look good (read, 'Tesla-like'), and the marketing hook of using the Mustang name is certainly attention-grabbing.

It's coming late next year, and is probably a shoo-in be only the fourth pure electric car to hit the 100,000 cumulative sales mark in the US (after the Tesla Model S, Model 3, and Nissan Leaf).

Will be a strong competitor to the upcoming Tesla Model Y SUV, also due out next year.

So... how much beer do you have to put in the cooler under the hood to make it go?

It's a little round town car, what part of it is a SUV?
You can put a cooler of beer in it, got it.
Can you put a bike in it?
Can you put a hockey team in it, or a hockey stick?
Maybe a tennis racket, but where you put the tennis bag, since you do have a cooler of beer?

My company is a supplier of test equipment to the Auto industry. The writing is on the wall. The gas engine is dead.
About 50% of our work right now is EV related. And most of the stuff we're bidding is too.

We recently got a project for a company making electric tractor trailers.

Are they close to solving the battery issue in cold weather?

It's not 'temporary'. It's reduced range due to the battery needing to heat the vehicle.
Gas vehicles have reduced range in the winter as well. They are simply less efficient. I have to fill my car more often in the winter (no one has solved the gas engine cold weather issue )

There isn't an 'issue' to solve. But it's something that's continually improved. They're moving to heat pumps, rather than resistive heating which is less efficient.
One of our projects right now is for EV heat pump testing.

Business is booming. Technology is improving. EV's are coming whether people want to believe it or not.

If Ford wanted an electric SUV/crossover why wouldn’t they just produce an all electric Bronco which is supposed to debut in 2020?
Just because you won't listen to reason does not mean I have to listen to idiocy.

Yes and no. Li-ion batteries do work less efficiently in very cold temperatures, that's simply physics, you can look it up.

However, that is superseded by the thermal management system (i.e. the battery isn't allowed to stay cold), and the fact of the power draw from the cabin heater and battery heater reducing the range.

But, if the battery didn't work less well at very cold temps, there wouldn't BE a battery heater, right?

It's not as big a deal in any case as some ppl make it out to be, you just need to charge more often on long road trips. The most EV-buying-ist nation on Earth is Norway, a very cold country indeed:

    All very true.

    Absolutely.

The 2010s were the decade of proving EVs could be viable at all (and they were).

The 2020s will be the decade of increasing/accelerating EV adoption and an explosion of new EV models from most automakers, i.e. 'EVs going mainstream'.

And the 2030s will be the decade of 'most ppl drive EVs now, it's no big deal'. And the only ppl who will cry bitter tears about it will be the Exxons, Koch Industries, and the like.

I could be confused, but I think the new Bronco is gasoline.

Now, there IS a company called ZeroLabs that takes original Broncos and converts them into hyper-luxury electric SUVs (for around $250K!), but I don't think Ford itself has an electric Bronco in the works quite yet.

Would be happy to be proven wrong, though.

Did they ever "solve" it with ICE? All engines suffer range/efficiency loss in cold weather. People have dealt with it on their ICEs for decades, apparently EVs are different somehow because they just are?

AAMOF....ICEs become so inefficient in deep cold they won't even start. Hence the invention of "block heaters" that plug in to even enable ICEs to start. Even block heaters aren't enough in some cases--on the North Slope oil fields...they don't even bother shutting off ICE vehicles in winter as they simply will not start again. If you travel on the Interstate in winter, you've probably seen 18-wheelers with cardboard strapped to cover the engine grill---because of cold weather problems with those engines.

I like the "Mustang" SUV .. marketed as a road vehicle not an offroad which one would expect from a Bronco, Explorer, etc. And I'm a purist with my original owner 1994 Mustang Cobra.

It's like Porsche. They used to make just sports cars .. 968 (had one), 928, 944 (had one), 911, 914 etc etc and they have multiple SUVs. Lambo .. same thing. You would think Volkswagen would just keep it to VW/Audi if it wasn't for the marketing allure of Porsche.

The Mustang SUV appears to be a 2 door .. so sticking with the "sports" image like Porsche and everyone else. Plus no problem fending off the "off road" purists using another name plate.

My hybrid car gets great gas mileage on electric .. except when I turn on the heater during winter, or A/C during summer. But then my gas car has the same problem. At least it makes my future choice easier, I nearly bought a Tesla instead getting a hybrid offering from Ford and saved a ton.

Yea that is a branding failure....it isn't an "SUV" by just about any definition, and it is only a "Mustang" because they call it one.

Hopefully it will be a good vehicle. OTOH GM has a track record with first generation vehicles.

Truthfully, it kinda looks like a 2-door Escape platform.

I was hoping the Escape/Corsair hybrid would offer a new hybrid setup, instead it appears to be the same rehash of the existing electric motor in their Mkz/Fusion/Max.
So, to me, the Mustang SUV is an evolution from that.

Yes, but not remotely to the extent that heaters do. (I believe the battery drop in efficiency is less than or about the same as gas vehicles at cold temps)
