And, for those of us give me sh1t for using hydraulic, I have a 20 dollar bill that says you can't get through a 100 pound chunk of red elm like this by hand!

At this pace you might just have enough wood for winter... by the beginning of summer

Actually my original thought was 100 dollar bill, but I would have had to put a time limit on it!

I hurt my left middle finger today, I threw a 100 pound log into the bucket on the bobcat and it bounced back and jammed the finger, not broken I don't think, but it sure hurts.

I need a nap after seeing that.

Actually, for some reason, no matter what I do, or eat or not do or not eat, I just don't build muscle mass. I might get stronger, but mostly, I just get tired!

    What's the goal? 2, 3, 5 years stockpile?

A year, maybe a year and a half is good. It's a real feeling of security.

Sounds like a good plan. That gives you a good backlog (pun) in case of injury, illness or binge watching Dr. Who...

Make sure it's well seasoned. We bought half a cord of oak, which turned out not to be very seasoned, and it does not burn well at all, even with starter blocks or the fake logs to get the fire started. I should have read the reviews of the place, seems like that was a common complaint, but it's a local company, so I wanted to support them.

I very, very rarely butcher a tree that is not already dead, so any moisture is water not sap, which is big. You have to keep in mind, I have been heating almot exclusively with wood for 46 years now and since '87 with the same stove.

wood storage is critical, when we built the wood shed a few years back it was a life altering deal, seriously, no more tarps, nothing but clean dry wood.

funny , back in the late 60's and early 70's when all the rage was to drop out and move into the wilderness and live off the land, well, I was one that went for it, hell bent for election. Sure there were compromises but we built our own house, while living in it, raised 4 outstanding kids, all well educated and productive, 2 of whom are raising their own now. I would rather to hard physical labor than trade that time for money and buy what I need. At some point I am going to start a blog of the "life and times"

Spent the day today tearing out the floor in my son's condo after a insipid water leak damaged the kitchen floor, underlayment, cabinets etc, (think particle board turned to compost) I know a contractor would charge over 10K for the reno/remodel but we can do it for under 3K.

    oh, and time!

Nice work. Crow bar and utility knife said it all!
