Optical Drive Not Detected After Update

    What The Folgers!!!!

Recently, on three separate computers, after updates were installed, my DVD/CD was not recognized.

Following "help" on the web seems to only result in step by step frustration and the feeling that the last nugget of support will suggest I write my own base code.

Does this happen on a regular basis to anyone else?

Note: on the other machines the drives were eventually back up but by no direct intervention by me.

Haven't had that particular issue. However for 3 months now I've had Windows monthly KBs that refuse to install on my desktop. Period. Not loading them manually, not re-downloading, not wiping WinUpdate's brains...nothing will get them to apply. Windows help is useless, as ever.

Went back to running Linux on my desktop. Good riddance.

I presume this is the new Windows 10 update for September?

Yup, it's almost brand new and started slurping updates almost immediately after being plugged in. Indeed, I don't believe that you could distinguish between installations and updates save for accept/decline popups which you mosly accept.

The other machines have updated without incident (laptop is rarely used so it might go crappers the next time it's flipped on).

I have a Microsoft Surface...and it has been mostly trouble free WRT updates...except last year for 2 months the keyboard didn't work due to a firmware update--device just outright refused to talk to it.

I need a new business computer BADLY, however, it has to be a windows due to the software I run for invoicing and book keeping. Current machine is Win7 but it will be a VERY cold day in hell before I use Win10 on my last desktop I bought it the day Win7 was released, about a hundred years ago.
    Of course I'm sure...that doesn't mean I'm right.....

On the newest machine the browser (IE11) crashes a lot but restores. I'm old and don't trust Edge and don't want different browsers on different machines... oh and it has not held a browser history since day one so I guess I can surf all the porn I want without discovery.

    …. aaaaaaaaaaaaand, it's back.

Another update and now, DVD is again up. No explanations. No clues. Just a sad sack who actually studied DOS before Windows shot outta Bill Gate's "Masterbyter" but is now too lazy and scared to even think about that DOS prompt... Yay!

In the future if you have problems, a really good resource is Tom's Hardware.

Interesting, latest 10 update changed my hdd to read only, what a fricking mess! Took a while to figure that one out!

Yes I'm sure, that doesn't mean I'm right.

if it weren't for SportTracks, QuickBooks Pro, my weather station software and proprietary garmin software (express) I would stick exclusively with Android and be perfectly content

I don't think there is anything you can do to stop auto driver install/updates though.

You generally need Windows 10 Pro for these. I'm also not sure how "sticky" the changes are, since I have Pro, have updated the policy, and the machine still slavishly applies whatever Microsoft sends out.

Also, I suggest getting patches from mfr's web site.

The policy editor is hidden in most iterations of windows 10, however, the batch file makes it visible and usable. whether it stops the updates, only time will tell.

    SWEET BABY JEEBUS

Computer crashed yesterday and entered both a diagnostic AND repair mode which bothFAILED.

Attempted various methods to restore function which all FAILED.

Was able to start Windows 10 in SAFE MODE (but without networking even though I selected networking).

Currently running the app that was running when all the latest Schlitz started to see if that's the prob.

Computer is literally just over a month old and has been buggy since day one. Does this sound like soft or hard ware... or both?

At least my laptop works so I can post here and make your lives bearable.

    SWEET BABY JEEBUS AGAIN!!!!!

I'd made up my mind to just turn the machine off and wait for the holidays to get it serviced. Running in Safe Mode but without an internet connection was slow and my other machines picked up the slack. Then, today, just on a lark, I turned it on and DAMN, IT'S WORKING FINE!!!

Without knowing what the problem was or why it self corrected, can I trust this machine??? Even now, I can note that the hard drive "task light" has been hard at work for over 10 minutes without any input from me! What the hell is it doing??? You'd think the thing was my EX (she'd have periods when she'd inexplicably not want to be bothered, then suddenly pursue me around the house until I surrendered to her, ummmmm, demands for attention)!

And the optical drive has returned.

If you "upgrade" your Mac to macOS Mojave 10.14 this will be a problem for you as well. Your optical drive will work with burned discs but after you insert a blank disk it won't be visible in the Finder. There is a clumsy work-around: Insert a blank disk into your drive. Command click a folder you want to burn onto the disk and a contextual menu will appear with burn as a menu item. Release the mouse on this button and it will burn the disk.

Windows has been trying to force the latest update on me for several months now. I can put it off for a while but eventually it won't let you put it off any longer. The upgrade gets to the 81 percent mark and then my computer freezes up. At this point I can't even seem to be able to turn it off. I have to unplug it and plug it back in. Usually I have to do this a couple of times until Windows eventually boots up to my previous version. Have looked for answers but found none. Wish they would just leave me alone.
