Saw 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters'...

TLDR version: If you like Godzilla/kaiju/giant-monster movies, this is a pretty good one. If you don't, well, why the hell not? Those coming-of-age arthouse flicks get pretty dull after awhile.

It's been five years since the big-budget American reboot of Godzilla came out. That film got good reviews from the critics but 'meh' ones from audiences/fans, largely 'cuz it tried to be a good movie instead of a good Godzilla movie. Also, Godzilla's co-star monsters lacked charisma (though Bryan Cranston ruled, 'til they killed him off halfway through).

This sequel fixes all that. It's not a great movie per se, but it is a pretty damn good Godzilla movie. And wouldn't you know it, the critics don't like it, but audiences seem to, judging by the Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Long story short... eco-terrorism, Tywin Lannister's the bad guy, the girl from Stranger Things shows up and you like her, lots of 'oh noes, my son died five years ago and its Godzilla's fault' human melodrama, yadda yadda yadda gotta restore the natural balance/Earth is actually healthier with giant monsters running around (sure is more fun, if nothing else!), and then Godzilla shows up, BUT THIS TIME he has all of his most charismatic giant monster co-stars from the old Japanese movies... Mothra, Rodan, and my personal favorite, King Ghidorah the three-headed space dragon. Total, complete, and well-filmed mayhem ensues, but at scale.

What more could a giant-monster fan want? Though a minor 'boo' to them not including the six-inch tall singing twin Mothra priestesses in this one. They're kinda iconic in the old movies.

Three stars out of four if you're a Godzilla fan and you see it in IMAX. Everyone else need not apply. Out.

(oh, and they're teeing up for a Godzilla vs King Kong sequel. I'm prolly gonna skip that one, this here is probably the high point of the trilogy).

Eh, I'm not a huge monster movie fan, unless they include giant robots.. so I'll give this one a skip.

The joy for me was watching a guy in a rubber suit stomping around a diorama set (2016 "Shin Godzilla" was really good modern day homage). This CGI version seems a little too perfect and way too dark (where's the brightness button?).

This movie needed a flying turtle.

With all the rehash . . . er . . . remakes happening in the movies I'm waiting for a remake of the 1967 movie "Son of Godzilla".

Or your fave, a time-travel subplot?

It's actually pretty good for what it is, Jaep. I was surprised.

Of course, the new one doesn't have those old Godzilla films' sense of physics...

I thought it was meh. The human storyline left a bad taste in my mouth and felt tacked on. Did Eleven really need to be there? As you stated before in your commentary about "Pacific Rim" I suspect the movie studio was keeping down costs and have the monsters only show up at night.

Yeah, 'cuz they're totally the same genre.

Next up... Elton John vs Megalon.

Though come to think of it, I'd totally see that movie.

Finally watched this last night. I dozed off a couple of times. I'm a Godzilla fan, but this movie was just too horrible. Glad I didn't pay for it, and only wasted my time. Maybe I should have refreshed my memory and watched some of the old ones first, I dunno. Ugh.

It’s weird, no one here likes the movie, but it’s got an 83% audience score over at Rotten Tomatoes.

I liked it a lot, so did the wife and kid. It didn't feel nearly as slow as the first one. There was a lot more monster action and they managed to one up the kill shot from the first one which was pretty damn good.

I know, right? Way better than the first one. Had all of the best monsters from the ‘Godzilla universe’ too (‘cept Mechagodzilla, who I’m sure will show up eventually).

Sure, there were things I didn’t like about it. Kyle Chandler is more a supporting actor and can’t really carry a film as the lead. There could’ve been a bit more camp humor, like in some of the original films. And I wanted a little more Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Ken Watanabe, and Charles ‘Tywin Lannister’ Dance.

But overall... pretty fun movie. And very fun if you’re a big Godzilla fan.

Godzilla has sucked ever since they got rid of Mothra.

Mothra is central to this one.

Endlessly disappointed that the Toho Jet Jaguar trailer was only an April Fool's stunt.
