Am I the only one hoping for a long power outage at work? That would be a shame

I'm registered for a big conference Monday to Wednesday next week, in Bethesda, MD. I just got this email from them (Caps are theirs):

It is up to the individual to decide if they wish to attend or cancel. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS AT THIS TIME.

Why, exactly would someone cancel if there will be no refunds?

We're playing it by ear with the training on Tuesday. I'm of the opinion that I don't think its safe if we get half of what is predicted, let alone actually what is predicted. But the powers that be request that we wait til Monday to make a final decision.

So I get to call 25 people on Monday morning and either tell them its off and we have to find another day that won't work for everyone or that its on and they have to hike 3 miles in a hurricane wearing a 45 lb pack, then spend all afternoon doing outdoor continuing education on fire equipment. People are going to be pissed off either way, so who cares!

Any updates on the path/severity/likelihood of this storm hitting the NYC area??

I tend to be very skeptical, but John's already calling around looking to rent a chainsaw. He's not even home from his business trip yet

And of course it's all the talk here at work.

Weather.com has pretty extensive comerage....it looks like the path has narrowed to somewhere between the outer Banks and just north of NYC. 75MPH winds, storm surge Heavy rain and/or snow and hitting at full moon high tide.

    got my generator

Its a stressful waiting game to see where the final track will be. Probably skip my ride tomorrow and start getting ready

You know, I have no interest in a generator. It is a little like a snowblower. Several hundred dollars tied up in a maintenance headache which will occupy precious space in the garage.

If we lose power, we lose power.

If the basement fills up with water past the oh-sh1t point, I might be sorry, but it hasn't happened yet in 15 plus years.

I got a shotgun, a rifle, and a two wheel drive.

    I'll get by.

Also, I got some canned food, a bottle of hooch, and wireless internet. So I should be ok, right?

Can't seem to access weather.com from work. Didn't have time to check the weather before leaving the house this morning, and was wondering.

If nothing else, it's something to break the monotony, though doomsday weather reports get old when they don't pan out.

Have a little generator at the BIL's house to power something if we really need it. Other than that, what are you really going to do thats going to change anything? We have some food, we have some water, we have gas in the cars and the chainsaw. The house is high enough that we don't get flooded and hopefully the woods provide enough protection that none of the trees fall on the house. But if one did, thats what insurance is for. Nothing I can do about it.

Fully expecting to lose power for at least a day or so. Its going to be bad here. 4-8" of rain, 45-60 mph sustained winds, 60+ gusts. Batten down the hatches everyone!
