    Swans

I've been watching a pair of nesting swans on one of the routes I ride. I thought that my Mother would be interested so I've been taking photos and e-mailing them to my brother who she is living with so he can keep her up to date. She has really been enjoying the reports.

The photos started with the nest and 7 or 8 chicks, they were hard to count

They soon left the nest and were out and about

but, alas, they dwindled down to 5

My Mother was sad that some were lost, but she really enjoyed seeing the pictures

Ma spent this past weekend with my wife and myself so I brought her over to see them herself. There were only 4 , which made her sad, but she was overjoyed to see them in person, so to speak. Sorry, no photos.

I got buy again today and took a couple of more photos for my Mother.

Ma said that she hopes that whatever animal is eating those chicks chokes on their bones.

    Nice pictures.

I live in the 1000 Islands and on my jog route there are a pair of swans. I've only seen daddy swan lately so I'm hoping to see momma and babies soon.

Was that a goose getting that close to the babies? The male swan where I live is constantly chasing the geese and their babies. He is really quite aggressive.

Coolness points velodog. Thanks for posting....reminded me...Saw a family of ducks....crossing a really busy road, Ma and bunch o chicks...no idea what happened to them. My guess is that a snap'n turtle had some swan soup. Keep us posted.

Nature is harsh and those dead cygnets (not chicks, that would make them chickens) is why they had more than just three eggs. You can let your mum know that adult males are called cobs and females pens. Look at this cute kit that likely has eaten a dead cygnet or two.baby-fox-stretching-adorable-muzzle.jpg

In Olde England you had to be Royalty to eat swan, serfs weren't allowed, so must taste more better than chicken.

Interesting, the one shot in the OP has a goose in it. Geese and Swan do NOT get along at all., they often use Swan decoys to keep geese from landing in small ponds.
    Of course I'm sure...that doesn't mean I'm right.....

I've always considered swans to just be geese with a better wardrobe.....
