Her house was right above mine, further up the hill, when I was growing up. By that time she'd really ballooned out. It kind of made me nervous. It clashed with her sexy come-on. My aunt, though, a singer in her own right (though never a success), was a true fan.
Mapie is a conventional looking former Hollywood bon viveur, now leading a quiet life in a house made of wood by an isolated beach. He has cultivated a taste for culture, and is a celebrated raconteur amongst his local associates, who are artists, actors, and other leftfield/eccentric types. I imagine he has a telescope, and an unusual sculpture outside his front door. He is also a beach comber. The Rydster.

Peggy Lee was about the hottest woman ever to slink across a stage (along with Anita O'Day). She had a very varied repertoire too. I just tried to find a video of 'Lover' on YouTube but no luck. Thanks for posting these, Creaky. Whatever happened to real women who could sing?

I had a nun in grade school that called me her "Peggy Lee" student.

Me: Peggy Lee? What do you mean?
Sister Mary Discipline: Peggy Lee. Because every time I look at your grades I think "Is that all there is?"
    Me:

"Pardon me, but could you help out a fellow American who's down on his luck?"

I think her version of 'It Never Entered My Mind' is one of the all-time great performances of a Rodgers/Hart song. A great lament to the loss of a sex life...

I saw her at the Palmer House in Chicago in 1972. She was older, but still was a hot lady.
