Fox:Disney is marketing "Secretariat" to the Bible Belt

    http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment...sed-filmgoers/

Does this really belong in PO? I imagine that it does, since "faith-based" and Christianity are now entrenched in the language of politics.

I've read a couple of reviews (NY Times, Washington Post) of "Secretariat" and, from a Google search, found this Fox News article. So far, it's the only one that even mentions--never mind focuses completely--on Disney's marketing the movie as faith-based to a Christian audience.

An excerpt from the Fox story:

Disney has been marketing “Secretariat” to the Bible Belt by organizing special screenings of the film, which hits theaters on Oct. 8, for Christian bloggers, reviewers and influencers, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

They have also produced special marketing materials for the audience. Screening invites sent to non-religious outlets described the film’s story in purely secular terms. But for the benefit of Christian reviewers, the invitation goes on to add that “The movie is directed by Randall Wallace….Not only is Randall one of the most successful directors of all time, he is also a devout Christian.”

I also watched a couple of films of races by Secretariat, prompted by a reference by Andrew Beyer (an expert on horse racing, not a movie critic) of the Washington Post:

Not a word about Christianity or faith in his article. Did he miss something? Maybe he's just not a Christian (like our President?).

Well, he has directed two other movies... for a total of three... including "The Man in the Iron Mask."

NY Times review -- cynical about Disney's introjection of faith

The first article in the Times didn't mention faith, but it wasn't a review of the movie.

Now the review is in, by Manohla Dargis,

titled: "Putting Faith in Speed and Sinew"

    http://movies.nytimes.com/2010/10/08...tml?ref=movies

No mention (unlike Fox) about Disney's pandering / marketing to the Bible Belt. But, it does address the theme of faith. In the first sentence, it describes the movie as:

"...“Secretariat,” a gauzy, gooey, turf-pounding, Bible-thumping tribute to the celebrated 1970s thoroughbred from the wonderful weird world of Disney.

It's almost enough to put me off from seeing it but, religiosity aside, it does sound like a good movie. And, who could resist seeing Secretariat (or his stand-in) race.

Besides, I'm desperate to do something tonight.
