Michigan Residents Receive Letter Calling Their Christmas Lights 'Pagan'

Holy Pagan Xmas lights, Batman! WWJD?

Homeowners in Hudsonville, Mich., have been singled out for displaying what an anonymous letter-writer calls "pagan" lights and decorations on their properties.

On Wednesday night, residents of Vintage Drive found a letter attached to their mailboxes suggesting that anyone with Christmas lights or decorations should re-think their beliefs, because Christmas displays honor the "Pagan Sun-God" and do not pertain to the birth of Jesus, according to ABC News affiliate WZZM.

The letters start out on a friendly note, with "Hi Neighbor, you have a nice display of lights." But the self-described "love note" quickly changes tone, explaining how the "pagan tradition" of putting up lights began.

"I laughed because I think it's ridiculous that people would get upset over Christmas lights," said Danette Hoekman, who received the letter.

This is what really gets me about the sad individuals who feel it is their right and duty to point out the spiritual shortcomings of others. If the writer had any conviction in the virtue of his opinions s/he would have knocked on the door and made his point face-to-face...and then taken the arse-kicking that would have quickly ensued like the true Christian martyr he doubtless aspires to be.

    idleness

Personally, the author of said letter has a bit too much time on their hands. There are great charities out there that could use some idle hands very well.

I wonder what percentage of Americans even celebrate Christmas as a Christian ritual, and what percentage that do actually do more than just give it a little bit of lip-service and/or show up at church for that one time this year?

Shouldn't this jack-ass be calling for people to abandon celebrating Christmas at this time of year anyway since it's really just a hijacking of the Roman festival of Saturnalia (probably originating as a winter solstice celebration)? IOW, the whole thing is "pagan" not just the Christmas lights, trees, gift giving, etc.

^^^^^This. Both Christmas and Easter were 'bolt-on' concepts designed to win over Pagan hearts and minds. Happy Yuletide brethren.

Yeah, completely not surprised it's Hudsonville. Probably more conservative than Holland or Zeeland.

Why are Pagan's being discriminated against? They've had their beliefs a lot longer than Christians have.

The funny thing is, there's a grain of truth in what the letter said (check out, e.g., their mention in "The Golden Bough.") Plenty of pagan rituals have been co-opted by Christian faiths to fit their ways, bfd. Just good marketing of a new and improved product; I say let them have their fun.

Note to Michiganders: I can't say whether you all should consider Christmas lights to be pagan in origin or in nature, but you should know these lights are festooned all over Ohio:

    Just sayin'.

If you think about it, this exactly what is happening with the secularization of Christmas (and Easter) as well. The religious has been replaced by consumerism, which is in some ways is regrettably the new religion.

Love it! One of the biggest reasons I left Michigan is Bat [email protected] crazy stuff like that. Christian tradition is a construct of the conference of Nicaea anyway - not talking about the message my believing amigos, just the packaging. Anyway so some overly serious person tells their neighbours they are going to hell, when I lived in London that happened daily, does it need to be in the national news?

This war on Christmas from the Christans needs to stop!
