UN Investigator Warns US on Use of Drones

A U.N. human rights investigator warned the United States Tuesday that its use of unmanned warplanes to carry out targeted executions may violate international law.

Philip Alston said that unless the Obama administration explains the legal basis for targeting particular individuals and the measures it is taking to comply with international humanitarian law which prohibits arbitrary executions, ''it will increasingly be perceived as carrying out indiscriminate killings in violation of international law.''

Interesting article. Iím wonder if Obama is going to share classified intelligence with UN in order to continue using drones?

So it would be okay if there were a person actually in the plane flying it rather than in a bunker far away flying it? That seems dumb.

what if we use them to take out UN investigators?
Whenever the legislators endeavour to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience, and are left to the common refuge which God hath provided for all men against force and violence - John Locke

Actually, I think we'd do better to spend what we're spending now on running wireless internet through the place and hand out netbooks to everyone.

It would be 1979 in reverse... They would all charge north to invade Russia in hopes getting some of those hot girls they discovered on the internets.

Does that mean if we find Bin Laden and kill him with an unmanned drone, it would be against the law? This has got to be the stupidest thing I've heard in quite a while. It must not take much to a get a job with the UN. I can only hope there was more before or after that statement.

I like Andy69's suggestion of using the drones to target UN inspectors. I think we should use KenB's munitions.

Neutron bomb, kills everything but leaves most of the infrastructure intact.

ok, but since Afghanistan has no infrastructure, might as well nuke it.

On a serious note... I was under the impression that our presence in Afghanistan was duly sanctioned under various UN resolutions. Am I incorrect?

I guess we would have to use a F22 Raptor to take him out.

We should revert back to swords: bullets, as you know, mean that you can be pretty far away from your enemy and still kill them. New war rules: you can't kill your enemy unless you're making eye contact.

I can understand why the ability of the U.S. President to summarily execute any non-U.S. citizen outside of the U.S. would concern UN human rights investigators.

Hey, that strategy worked at Bunker Hill. Oh wait, we lost that one, didn't we? But we sure kicked some British ass.
