Omloop Het Nieuwsblad - breakaway rider from womens race catches mens race

So this one is probably going to draw all sorts of comments from people on the Interwebs... maybe a just 10 minute gap between the races was poor organization?

Can't let a woman pass the men, especially if the women started after them.. it would bruise the mens fragile egos......

That was messed up if you ask me.

More so...because the women's race wasn't broadcast at all...and the stereotypical parade UCI men's race was broadcast from 100k to go.

First there should have been at least a 10 minute larger time gap between the start of the two races. That was just stupid on the race organizers part.
Next, IMO, they should have just let the women keep racing and let them finish in the middle of the men's race. Stopping the women's race was flat out the wrong decision.

AFAIK, the menís and womenís courses split at some point so they would have had to untangle a mixed peloton which would have been a bit dangerous, so the race officials probably had limited options

For sure, it was a screw up but well done to Nicole Hanselmann. It was a great effort and although she finished well down the field, she got a lot of publicity for herself, her Bigla team and womenís cycling - even in main stream media.

It wasn't the mixing of male and female riders that was the main problem.

The lead female had come up on the SAG vehicles, ambulances and other vehicles in the caravan following the men.

There is no way the staff staff vehicles, rider support vehicles, etc.. from the lead of the women's race could have safely navigated through the caravan following the men's race.
