TdF '20 Stage 14 Sep 12 Discussn. Spoiler Alert!

TdF '20 Stage 14 Sep 12 Discussn Thread. Spoiler Alert!

Stage 14 is a 115-miler that presents a lot of challenge, as the tour gets well into the second half of the tour. Sprint points are available quickly, at the 20-mile mark. Then, the fun begins. This stage has three climbs, with the first being the most notable - over a thousand feet up, with grade overall noted as 5.6%. So, the stage will begin with a scramble for sprinter points, and then a quick shift to mountain legs.

From this first summit, riders face a second summit soon after, and then a great descent, followed by maybe 15 miles of flat, and they are two-thirds of the way through the course. Besides the sprinters likely forming their own gruppo in the back of the course, the GC hopefuls again will have a hard day of riding as they make sure to check each other.

They then face another climb which is not as high, and not as steep, but is pretty long - maybe 16 miles to the summit. The correspondingly long descent brings them to the final ten miles, wit the opportunity for some regrouping.

The final two or three miles are in Lyon, with a route that includes lots of turns and a couple modest hills. So, while the final great descent down from the final mountain might allow riders to re-group, these final miles at the finish will spread riders out, and they are favorable for allowing a breakaway to survive. After a final right turn, it look like the riders have a nice straightaway for a third of a mile, on a broad city boulevard.

I love what Sunweb is doing and couldn’t agree with this article more.
