Vuelta a Espaņa 2017 - Stage One (Spoilers Allowed)

    Vuelta a Espaņa 2017

The last Grand Tour of the year, the Vuelta a Espaņa is often a challenge to call due to the fact that many riders are carrying over injuries and fatigue from the Tour de France as well as other races.

But while lounge-chair bookies might find it an odds-maker's nightmare, the Vuelta always delivers some beautiful scenery and some tough racing. This year's edition starts in France with a Team Time Trial (TTT) and works its way South to Spain through the mountains.

The time trial should benefit teams like Sky and Movistar who have traditionally done well in this discipline. As much talk has been made of Chris Froome's attempt at a Tour/Vuelta Double - it's safe to bet that all eyes will be carefully tracking Sky's performance on the almost pancake flat route.

But this will not be an easy route as the days progress - some of the climbs down the road are almost demonic and I suspect the true GC contenders will become very clear very soon.

This is also Alberto Contador's Vuelta swansong - so that will be an underlaying theme throughout I suspect.

Movistar's rider (Arcas) who crashed is getting X-rays. The team also said they are very happy they are only 24 seconds behind BMC. (Almost sounds like they expected the TTT to be worse.)
